Chillin’? Yes, we is chilling with: Lina Labs, and Oly.Lo #Chill #HipHop #StudyBeats

•January 28, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Tricky day pre-Friday. Want to anticipate the weekend but can’t quite do so yet. And still hard times in lockdown and more Covid impacts. Let’s ease our way along with some chilled beats from Lina Labs and Oly.Lo.

Lina Beats is from Hamburg, Germany. The track is Change. Released at the tail end of last year, Lina Beats says of the track, “2020 was a special year which brought a lot of change and I hope things will change for the better next year. That’s what inspired me to write this song.” The start of this year has brought the awful news of more than 100,000 deaths in the UK from Covid. That’s a number that starts to become so large it’s hard to comprehend in a meaningful way. And there’s more to go. Change is a sort of soothing panacea. It uses a delicate jazz guitar to wander gracefully but slightly mournfully along. In the background are shuffly hip hop beats that give a bit of depth without overwhelming the guitar. An at less than two minutes it doesn’t outstay its welcome. Subtly beautiful.

Oly.Lo is from Atlanta, Georgia but says he has, “deep roots in the pacific northwest.” His track Renewed was made with Wes Harris and also has a focus on the times we’re in. Of it he says. “Coming into 2021 there is a lot of baggage and heartache and I hope this song brings hope.”

Renewed also uses a combination of guitar and beats. The guitar offers some drawling chords while the beats have a nice crunch and proper bass kick to move things along. Has a front porch whittling feel. We never had a front porch but I did used to whittle. All too often misused the knife and stabbed my knee by accident. As much deja vu as renewed perhaps.

A slice of lo-fi House from: Lukeozade – In Orbit #House #DeepHouse

•January 27, 2021 • Leave a Comment

I’m not sure I know what organic house means or even whether this is it. But Lukeozade’s In Orbit is a lovely gentle piece of lo-fi house with deep house elements.

Lukeozade is an Irish Producer and DJ, living in London. He’s got a classical background and that peeps through occasionally on In Orbit, his debut single. There’s a bunch of 909 drums alongside some delicate synths and some background ethereal vocals. This gives the track a carefully structured and really layered feeling that takes a few listens to fully appreciate. The 909s give it that old school feeling but everything else has a more future-orientated bent. Great home listening track.

Melodic deep house with Movesayer – Sundust #DeepHouse #MelodicTechno @thnktnkrecords @movesayer

The weather’s still cold but the music is cheering and warming from Movesayer.

Movesayer (Julian Winkler) is from Denver, Colorado. He’s released on European labels previously but his new Sundust EP is out closer to home, on THNK TNK Records of Colorado, USA. The title track is a blend of some deliciously warming deep house with some cheerful melodic techno. This gives Sundust a smart precise feel from the beats but a bit of softness from the deep house synth lines that dance around like dust motes. It’s a cup of hot chocolate in the snow.

Dark experimental electronica: Numeral – Sulusan #Electronic #Experimental #IDM #Ambient

•January 25, 2021 • Leave a Comment

After yesterday’s snow there’s a bright crispness around here and that’s reflected in Sulusan by Numeral.

Numeral is Swiss artist Philippe Adam, a drummer for various Swiss indie pop bands (The Lugubrious, Faux Tales). But he’s also been developing electronic soundscapes full of light and dark melodies. Sulusan is taken from his self-titled Numeral EP. It’s a moody piece of bright electronica. There’s obviously a care and attention devoted to the beats but they are carefully packed away in the background to provide a blank canvas onto which lots of bright and sometimes a touch jarring melodies and chimes are projected. A thoughtful start to your electronic week.

Ambient Sunday with: Haquin x Zaid Al-Nayazi, and Olafur Arnalds x Trip Tease #Ambient #Downtempo #House

Something meditative and something organic from Haquin x Zaid Al-Nayazi, and Olafur Arnalds x Trip Tease.

Let’s start with something meditative from Haquin x Zaid Al-Nayazi. Haquin is a music producer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer from Edinburgh, Scotland. Also from Scotland, Zaid Al-Nayazi is a Scottish/Iraqi musician based in Edinburgh. Most of Haquin’s stuff has that meditative air. And the track today is perfectly in line with that. Here’s Acorn taken from the Ancients EP.

Acorn is, “based around the idea of the growth of an acorn in to an ancient oak tree.” The opening section is full of drone and tense strings. A little bit of unfurling sound. And then spreading out. In so doing it maintains a lovely stately delicacy from the strings and underlying drone. Magisterial.

Norway’s Olafur Arnalds doesn’t really need any introduction. His track Brot has a Trip Tease remix. Trip Tease is Mexican producer Carlos Salame. This remix is described as a, “Remix I did for Olafur Arnalds, authorized by him but not official.” Whatever the status, this is beautiful.

A set of keening strings open before broken beats come along. The whole thing is a gentle uplifting piece of organic house that takes the original to a less formal place. It casually shuffles its way along with bass and beats offering the structure of wholemeal and the strings the heartwarming smell of fresh toast. I think it’s time for my breakfast.

And here’s the original track

Get your Saturday buzzing with: Nick Cosic – Monome (Vineyard Studio Session #1) #IDM #Techno #Experimental

I know there’s a temptation for the weekends in lockdown to be much like the week. But let’s mark the difference with this buzzing IDM techno track from Nick Cosic. Time to get up and at ’em.

Nick Cosic is from Serbia and has decades of experience in the Serbian music scene. His thing is modular arrangements and vintage synths. And that’s what you get on Monome (Vineyard Studio Session #1). It’s a track that sits somewhere between IDM and techno but doesn’t quite fit either. It has a raw, slightly primitive analogue power.

Of the track Nick says it was, “Inspired by algorithmic composition & modular synths. The lead melody is played by a musical program I’ve coded into a synth module.” I say feel yourself vibrate as the low end sounds thrum and vibrate. They enter your very core. Meanwhile there’s a slightly psychedelic element to the higher end arrangements. Gives it a hypnotic beguiling quality. Analogue techno at its best. Brilliant stuff. Taken from the Traces album.

Friday is going minimal with Anton Kling – Mareld #Minimal #House

•January 22, 2021 • Leave a Comment

It’s been a long week between steel, eels and Storm Christoph. I want something that’s more inward than outward. Here’s Anton Kling with the gentle minimalism of Mareld.

Anton Kling is from Sweden but is now based in Oslo, Norway. But I know no more. As for Mareld that may mean Bioluminescence but I’m no Swedish speaker. As for the track, it’s a thing of gentle beauty and heart-warmingly long at a time when I get too many sub-to minute tracks.

The seven+ minutes unfold from a slow drone synth and accompanying soft clatter of beats. It’s all wide open sounds and spaces. There’s an organic tinge to the minimal approach. There’s an expanse of space out there with a crackle of winteriness. And it remains essentially human. There’s the promise of warmth and company in the distant wordless vocals. Perfect for a glass of malted whiskey. Neat, please. A splash of water if you must. No ice. The clink will interfere with the mood of the track. Aaaand relax.

Out of the wrong came forth sweetness: Yeti Tears – Lekki #Downtempo #Chill

•January 21, 2021 • 1 Comment

Being in the UK the media has been saturated with US political developments, some European ones and little else of the world. And that’s especially true of Africa, despite the UK’s colonial past. It took Yeti Tears to highlight the Lekki shooting / massacre in Nigeria on his track Lekki.

Let’s deal with the incident first. On the night of 20 October 2020, at about 6:50 p.m, members of the Nigerian Army opened fire on peaceful End SARS protesters at the Lekki toll gate in Lagos State, Nigeria. Amnesty International stated that at least 12 protesters were killed during the shooting. End SARS is a decentralised social movement, and series of mass protests against police brutality in Nigeria. The slogan calls for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a notorious unit of the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuse. Yeti Tears says, “The artwork on the album cover was painted by Yeti Tears in honor of his mentor Gilbert Young’s legacy and bring awareness to the fight for justice against SARS in Nigeria.”

The track is a bit of a surprise. It’s neither a rage against brutality nor a lament for lives lost. Instead, it’s a chilled, hopeful house track. It has ascending and uplifting chords. It’s all about brighter and better days and futures. Yeti Tears says, “The song was written in 122 BPM & G Major to be an uplifting escape from the sad state of the corrupt country.” There’s some deep house here in the beats but also the lush style of something like Anjunabeats. Perfect chill music. But don’t forget what lies behind.

Midweek #Techno with Thomas Lovelace – Tanz der Substanzen

•January 20, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Right, half way point in the week reached. Lots to be done today, so let’s get an infusion of hard techno from Thomas Lovelace.

Thomas Lovelace is is a Vienna based sound artist and Techno Producer. Originally from Italy, his style is full of dark drum layers and stabs of sound. Tanz der Substanzen is one of those rare techno beats that has enough darkness and power for clubs and yet enough interest to work as home listening. Taken from his new Age of Exploration EP it mixes pounding layers of drums and dark bass with stabs of sound that have an almost rave quality about them and yet still manage to be a semblance of melody.

He says the EP comes following, “the year of big changes.” The tracks, “captures personal stories that reflect on society’s challenges that come with an unclear future.” And Tanz der Substanzen (dance of substances) does have a hurtling toward the future quality from the drums, with the bass reminding us that nothing is certain here and we’re in a new state of instability. Great track.

Happy and dreamy with: Le Twan – Influence Bruitale #Synth #Spacey #Cosmic @le_twan

•January 19, 2021 • Leave a Comment

Listen to this or the puppy gets it. No really. Do have a listen. Le Twan is back with some gorgeously spacey cosmic synths on Influence Bruitale.

Le Twan (Antoine Gautier) is based in Geneva, Switzerland. His indie background always gives his stuff a slightly leftfield twist. And this is no exception. Influence Bruitale is taken from his new No Escape EP. It’s an absolutely delicious confection. It starts off like the best and purest synthpop you ever heard before a bouncy bass comes along to give it a spring in its step. It all spirals from there. There’s no holding the synths on this helium-filled track down. That weightless feeling is only accentuated by the sample that talks about how dreamy it is. As she says, “I love this music.”

Proper cosmic job that can’t fail to put a smile on your face.
