    When I was doing events for the book, I would often begin by explaining my rationale: the excessive emphasis on Trump, and the range of issues that he overshadowed. And then, without fail, the first question would always be about Trump.

    'What is America, and why is this happening to it?' is not a question where an umbrella thesis fits. 'Tired of Winning' is a composite picture. It's still partial, and full of my own limitations. But I don't regret taking that approach, especially now.

    It's so easy to give glib answers, from a limited purview, without direct observation. My approach was to write a set of serialised essays with as much on-the-ground reporting as I could muster.
