Week of mobilization and international solidarity from September 21 to September 30, for all our comrades kidnapped all over the world. in en-gr-es-it-ger (Chile)

Week of mobilization and international solidarity from September 21 to September 30, for all our comrades kidnapped all over the world.

The survival of capitalism is so monotonous and is structured in such a way that it is not so different from that of cruel prison. Cities, timetables, work, school, family and countless repressive bodies are  suffocating us in a way that resembles a big prison unit. Surveillance cameras 24 hours a day, thousands of cops defending property, severe judges smiling satisfied when they enforce their harsh laws, tight handcuffs before their impregnable cages, etc, etc: this is what society uses in order to keep individuals under control; those who, fearing the punishment reserved to those who trespass the codes of imposed behaviour, stay silent, get used to oppression, absorb it like an integral part of life, like something natural, and so they prefer to avoid conflict with authority instead of rebelling. The powerful in all States don’t spare any efforts to repress and imprison those who have set themselves against the existent.

But today we are not going to write about survival within capitalism. We want to greet those who did not hesitate to trespass their moral enclosures and fought power face to face, those who today are inside the most blatant edifice of repression, prison. We are writing to express our solidarity with our comrades in jail. Power attacks by imprisoning comrades and organizes itself in order to crush the ideas of freedom. The revenge of power particularly hits well known individuals who openly declare themselves antiauthoritarian or anarchist and make an important weapon of struggle out of the spreading of ideas-deeds, as happened in Italy, Bolivia and Chile. The spectre generating from the possibility of an international web (we don’t mean any kind of organization) must continue to materialize like a real proposal.

A web through which comrades in different parts of the world - who don’t know one another nor will they ever meet, don’t obey any kind of structure or need any ideologies or ‘leaders’, can unite their will, efforts and complicity in order to face dominion in all its aspects, and with different instruments can overcome language barriers and fictitious borders and establish links of solidarity by overcoming false impositions…

Therefore, from September 21 to September 30,  we call for a week of unrest and solidarity with our brothers and sisters, with comrades kidnapped all over the world. It shouldn’t be necessary to make calls for a week of unrest, as we normally don’t like to do this because ‘solidarity’ does not knows calendar dates. But actions are being diluted in the endless chasm of information and in ‘so-called local struggles’, whereas the concentration of our energies in a limited period of time will help us to give a renewed and constant impulse to the struggle against prison and the spreading of libertarian ideas. Any action, any word of support gives strength and courage to prisoners.  And in this struggle for total liberation we don’t forget the repression suffered by millions of animals locked up in zoos, circuses and laboratories. We must struggle for their liberation.

This is a call to say, by multiform actions and different instruments, that our imprisoned comrades are not forgotten. Our actions of solidarity elude all watchtowers and run over kilometres of ocean in order to embrace all the irreducible standing out in the struggle inside and outside prison.  However we put the abstract imposition of borders into question, since so-called internationalism shouldn’t be such, considering that ‘in the world of bosses we are all foreigners.’

Rebel greetings to:

With anger and love…

Saluti ribelli a:

Rebelische Grüsse an:

Email addresses for correspondence with anarchist prisoners – Eat, Billy & Hidayat (Indonesia)

March 30, 2012 325 Magazine

Now it is possible to write emails to Eat and Billy, members of Long-Live
Luciano Tortuga Cell – IRF/FAI, and also to Hidayat (AKA Yaya). Their
friends/comrades will print them out and show them the messages of
solidarity. Communication is vital to break the isolation of prison. Also
reaching us at this time is the news that Hidayat is out of the isolation
cells.

Eat and Billy have taken responsibility for the destruction of an ATM bank
in Yogyakarta as an international solidarity action for Luciano Tortuga.
They are both presently being dragged through the courts in a long trial
process. You can email both of them here: blackhammer(at)riseup.net

Hidayat is a social combatant and anarchist who is accused of attacking a
police outpost during a mass riot against brutal police repression which
left several people dead, after people had occupied and blocked Sape port
(Bima), to protest the prescence of a hated mining company in the area.
You can email him here: swatantra(at)riseup.net

Letter from Hidayat, In Prison in Makassar (Indonesia)

March 6, 2012 325 Magazine

Dear comrades,

From the bottom of my heart and an ardent yearning to be with you, I
wanted to write this short letter in order to let all my friends know that
“a fire still burns in our hearts that cannot be extinguished”.

Being in this place is not something I wished for, but also it should not
be a cause for regret. We are aware and we understand that rebellion
against the State is vital, but it also entails risks. If anarchists
attack something that others hold sacred, then those people will not be
able to tolerate anarchism. That is what underlies all our fears. Whenever
someone opposes and seeks to destroy something we hold sacred, of course
we will resist with all our strength.

However, this is exactly the condition which occurs in our society. People
live orderly and obedient lives in this capitalist era with all its
failures and lies. It only seems good for people who believe in that way
of living, good citizens without creative desires, that wish for their
children to be as deferential as they are so that they are well-fitted for
civilisation, where success is measured through money.

“I don’t want to live such an ignorant and humiliating life”. Believe me
friend, anger will not cease even here, neither outside nor inside the
prison walls.

The spirit of rebellion takes aim at all social conditions. Like a mortal
disease it will swiftly spread through the body of power, gnawing at its
cells and causing its internal joints to crumble. Then like a time-bomb,
the moment will arrive, and it will explode, the old world remaining only
as rubble and ashes.

This is the fire of people’s anger. Fire that shines a guiding light
towards the end of this era and kindles the beginning of something new.

Dusk is approaching for this decrepit civilisation. And when the time
arrives, free spirits will celebrate their joy that night singing songs
and dancing.

This letter is dedicated to those fighting for freedom in Bima, in Kulon
Progo, in Takalar, in Pandang Raya, in Papua or wherever they may be. My
respect goes out to all of you who never tire in defending your land and
livelihood.

Long live horizontal solidarity, long live struggle, long live anarchism.

Swa Tantra

Our comrade Hidayat (Yaya), aged 23, was arrested in a mass protest action
in Makassar on 26th December 2011, as an act of solidarity with the people
of Bima who were brutally repressed by the Indonesian police on 24th
December 2011. In that act of repression, four people were killed and
dozens wounded. The people of Bima were resisting mining in their area and
were demanding that PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara’s mining permit be
revoked.

In the solidarity action, Hidayat was arrested and accused of causing
damage to a police outpost and a bank’s property. Since that day he has
been held in the Sultan Alanuddin prison in Makassar and is awaiting trial
under clause 170 of the Indonesian penal code (causing damage together
with others), which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Solidarity without limits!

Third court report of the anarchists Eat & Billy, Long-Live Luciano Tortuga Cell – FAI/IRF (Indonesia)

Feb. 15, 2012 325 Magazine

Rough translation from Negasi:

Reyhard Rumbayan (EAT) and Billy Augustan (Billy) were yesterday (February
14, 2012) back in court for the third time. This agenda together with the
second hearing on February 7, 2012, is to hear testimony from witnesses.
The Prosecutor said they would present 30 witnesses to prove and convince
the judge that the two combatants can be charged with terrorism.

The trial itself is increasingly clear to us as a sad parody of the State.
Two witnesses that were presented at the second trial even admitted that
their evidence consisted of only seeing Eat and Billy in a cafe before the
burning took place. And the two witnesses who are owners of the cafe, in
front of the judges, stated that they did not listen to the conversation
the night before the attack on the property occurs.

Another peculiarity is also evidence that the institutions are trying to
trap the brothers. One of the other witnesses claimed not to see the
combatant Eat at the scene when the BRI Bank ATM was firebombed. It is
almost certain that the prosecutor -as an instrument of State repression-
is unable to produce witnesses to prove that these two comrades are
involved in international terrorist networks. Making it clear that the use
of the articles on terrorism is a boring show.

Another bad scenario for the brothers-combatants is to create a separate
file for a second trial of the comrades. To try to force a witness
statement against the other. Both comrades also continue to receive the
intimidation and terror of the interrogators, plus the fact that they are
in sections of the prison where conditions are poor. The police also
deliberately cut off the communication efforts with several comrades of
our combatants, those who follow developments in this case and beyond
closely.

The process of protracted proceedings is also a tactic used by the State
to put the two comrades Eat & Billy into psychological exhaustion. The
State is deliberately making a second trial as a medium of terror against
blooming dissent.

But we are very confident that the two brothers will not give up and be
subjected to the forces of Capital and the State. We also believe that the
imprisonment that afflicts our friends will not dampen the expression of
anger against tyranny.

Long live the live action!
Freedom for Eat & Billy!
Burn all the prisons to the ground!

PS: Both comrades (Eat & Billy) ask for psychological support in the form
of donations of books. If anyone has read the book like a novel and want
to express solidarity, can contact us via email [negasidaurulang [at]
gmail.com) to discuss further the solidarity package distribution process.

Report from the 2nd day of the Trial of Eat & Billy (Indonesia)

Feb. 13, 2012 325 Magazine

Rough translation from Negasi:

The second phase of the trial against the two social combatants, Reyhard
Rumbayan (EAT) and Billy Augustan was held on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.
Agenda of the session that took place in the State Court of Lahore,
Jogjakarta was listening to the testimony from the witnesses. A witness
was presented who is burdensome and also devices were exhibited used by
the comrades of a second attack.

The trial will carry on tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday, February 14, 2012.
The third agenda is still the same as the second trial, which is present
as well as listen to the testimony of eyewitnesses.

We again call for solidarity as well as an invitation to everyone to
attend tomorrow’s hearing on the day. Indicate the solidarity of two brave
men who had attacked the oppressor. Show that we will not leave our
brothers alone.

Long live the live action!
Long live the resistance!

Report from Day 1 of the Trial of Eat & Billy (Indonesia)

Feb. 3, 2012 325 Magazine

The political attack by Long-Live Luciano Tortuga Cell – FAI Indonesian
Section against Auto Teller Machine (ATM) of BRI Bank located in Affandi
Street, Mrican Caturtunggal, Depok in Sleman Regency, faced it’s first
trial in Monday 31 of January 2011. Two social combatants, Billy Augustan
(Billy) and Reyhard Rumbayan (Eat) who took the political responsibility
for this attack, are charged with multiple clauses by the prosecutors at
the first trial in Sleman Court.

The lawyers for the social combatants: Andi Suryo Awalludin and Hillarius
NG Merro chose not to submit an exception to the judges. In front of the
Judge Leader, Mulyanto, three of the prosecutors: Wiwik Triatmini, Wahyu
Handoko and Tri Widi read the indictment alternately. In this case, the
two combatants (Eat & Billy) are charged with the same clauses but accused
of having different roles.

The clauses charged:

Chapter 7 of Law Act No. 15 in 2003 about the implementation of Law Act
No. 1 in 2002 about the Eradication of Terrorism
Chapter 15 of Law Act No. 15 in 2003 about the implementation of Law Act
No. 1 in 2002 about the Eradication of Terrorism
Chapter 170 Section 1 of Criminal Law Act about the criminal joined
actions with violence against people.
Chapter 187 Section 1 of Criminal Law Act about arsonist actions.
Chapter 406 Section 1 of Criminal Law Act about damaging others property.
The last two charges related to Chapter 55 Section 1 of Criminal Law Act
about the joined actions against laws.

After the trial, the prosecutor Wiwik Triatmini refused to give comment
about the reason behind why they charged five different chapters just in
one case. Triatmini pointed to Chief of Criminal Law Section as a person
who can explain it. Triatmini also refused to give the details why they
used Terrorism Act in this case, and denied behind the reason that he
still not read the interrogation files.

After hearing the charges from the prosecutors, there’s no exception from
the legal defenders. Andi Suryo Awalludin said that the charges do not
contain any absolute violation, about the location and facts.

Even so, Awalludin deeply regrets why the prosecutors used the Terrorism
Act and other chapters in this case. He said that the action done by the
two combatants aren’t terrorism because there no explosive elements in the
action against ATM of BRI Bank. Awalludin said that the prosecutors
imposed the use of the act. He also said that the Terrorism Act can’t be
used in this case. The reason is the two combatants aren’t the members of
a terrorist network in Indonesia [as the law describes the subject]. The
action itself for Awalludin is categorized as a criminal action and has no
relation with terrorism.

This trial itself lasted for 90 minutes and will be continued on Tuesday,
7 February 2012 with the agenda to listen to witness testimony.

International Solidarity with Eat & Billy, members of the Long-Live Luciano Tortuga Cell – FAI / IRF (Indonesia)

325 No State

From Indonesia to Chile…

October 7th, 2011 - two anarchists are arrested and imprisoned in
Yogyakarta, Indonesia, after an explosive incendiary attack against an
empty branch of BRI ATM bank. The action is declared through a written
document which the police catch the anarchists in possession of. The
written declaration states that the action is in solidarity with Luciano
‘Tortuga’ (a young anarchist combatant in Chile, who was accidentally
maimed in a bomb attack against Santander bank), as well as many anarchist
prisoners, including those of ‘Caso Bombas’ in Chile and the Revolutionary
Organisations – Conspiracy of Cells of Fire and Revolutionary Struggle in
Greece. Situating themselves firmly within the global revolutionary war
for liberation and freedom, Eat & Billy also state that their action is a
direct attack against the terrorism of the Indonesian State and their
police and military. Their text which takes responsibility for the direct
action speaks of numerous places that are terrorised by paramilitaries
like in West Papua, which is known for massacres and injustice. Also
mentioned are the areas of Kulon Progo and Wera (Bima) where iron mines
threatens the lives of the people, animals and plants, in these places
people are arrested and disappeared for speaking out and organising
resistance.

In vengeance, the Indonesian authorities want to increase the charges
against Eat and Billy from ‘property damage’ to ‘terrorism’, and would
like to apply newly made ‘anti-terrorist’ charges against the two comrades
for attracting international attention. This it would like to achieve by
charging them with the equivalent of ‘international terrorist links’,
which could increase their prison sentences considerably. As the agents of
‘justice’ arrange ‘anti-terrorist’ laws around them, trying to connive new
charges and premise for new investigations against the Indonesian
anarchist movement, the international police authorities want to make sure
the Indonesian State condemns Eat & Billy to long prison terms. This is
aimed to punish and intimidate the newly growing anarchist direct action
in South East Asia, and prevent the dynamic project of the Informal
Anarchist Federation / International Revolutionary Front (FAI / IRF) from
spreading.

This co-ordinated judicial intimidation must not be allowed to isolate and
bury Eat & Billy. The repression can be defeated by turning the prolonged
incarceration of any of our comrades into a painful memory for every
regime that seeks to dismantle and extinguish the new generation of
anarchists of praxis. Eat & Billy proudly took their responsibility for
the destructive attack against the BRI ATM bank. As they sit inside jail
waiting for their trial which comes in the near future, the blood-sucking
parasites who destroy the natural wild spaces for profit and enslave
continents are free to continue their murderous villainy.

This is a call for continued international solidarity with Eat and Billy,
in common struggle against the bankers, corporations, militarists and
nation-states. Let’s bear in mind the exploitation facing the people of
Indonesian in industries for foreign export – mines and sweatshop
factories for commercial products in fashion, information technology
products and Western tourism etc.

Eat & Billy have made their absolute refusal of the demands of power
despite long interrogations and stated their firm declaration of their
rebel individuality. Their courage and undying compassionate flame is part
of an increasing social inferno racing across the planet as a global
network of action and solidarity brings joy and rebellion into every place
where dignified people struggle for freedom and for the protection of the
environment.

Against the show-trials of Eat & Billy, which will take place on the
January 30 and February 1.

Occupy Indonesia: Anti-mine Protesters Burn Government Buildings, Banks, Two Protesters Killed

Dec. 26, 2011 Earth First! Newswire

Two protesters have been killed and 10 others injured during a raucous
protest over a planned goldmine, co-owned by an Australian company, in
eastern Indonesia.

The victims were among nearly 1000 people in Lambu village in West
Nusatenggara province trying to stop the goldmining project by Australia’s
Arc Exploration and its Indonesian partner, PT Sumber Mineral Nusantara.

The villagers fear the project will destroy their land and threaten
forests and water resources.

National police spokesman Major-General Saud Usman Nasution says police
were forced to fire on Saturday’s protest after demonstrators burnt down
dozens of government buildings, banks and homes.

Nasution said that police arrested 47 people involved in the protest,
which disrupted port and ferry services in the coastal town of Sape.

Police defended their use of force on Sunday after the deaths of two men
they shot while trying to disband a mob occupying the Sape port on Sumbawa
island who were protesting a local mine.

“The protest by occupying and prohibiting activities at the Sape ferry
harbor since December 20 disturbed the activities of society,” National
Police spokesman Insp. Gen Saud Usman said.

Police said the absence of ferry services had caused unrest among the
people, prompting law enforcement to act. Saud also accused the protestors
of “using women and children as shields” and refusing to negotiate.

Three “provocateurs” were arrested along with 44 others, including six
children, for questioning. Saud said police had confiscated 10 machetes,
four sickles, one spear and several fuel bombs from the protestors.

He identified those killed as Arief Rachman, 18, and Syaiful,17. Eleven
others were wounded.

Lahmuddin from the National Student League for Democracy said people
angered by reports of the shooting attacked and burned several buildings
including village halls, subdistrict offices and the houses of several
people known to work for the mining firm they were protesting against,
Sumber Mineral Nusantara.

National Police assistant for operations Insp. Gen. Badrodin Haiti
justified the shooting, saying the protesters were armed with machetes,
spears and knives.

“If a protest clearly runs against the law by trying to enforce a wish,
should it be allowed to happen?” Badrodin said, adding that the port was
crucial to the local economy. “We tried to persuade them [to disband] but
failed. I am not blaming the personnel in the field.”

He insisted the shots had not been aimed to kill. “The personnel, of
course, never had the intention to kill anyone,” he said.

Hundreds of students held rallies in Mataram and Bima, West Nusa Tenggara,
burning furniture they had removed from the district council building. The
district council accused police of “arrogance” and vowed to form a
fact-finding team.

Several religion-based student organizations issued a joint statement on
Sunday accusing the police of failing in their reforms and of being
“repressive.”

Anarcho-Punks Vandalize Indonesian Embassy in Moscow

Jakarta Globe | December 19, 2011

A group of self-proclaimed anarchist-punks in Moscow have released a video that shows them allegedly defacing the Indonesian embassy in Moscow in a show of support for dozens of punks being detained in Aceh.

In a YouTube video posted by user morevanili on Dec. 15, an unidentified man can be seen spray painting two sides of a building identified as the Indonesian Embassy in the Russian capital.

On one wall, the man writes in Russian, “Religion=Fascism.” On another wall, the same man paints the slogan, “Punk is not a crime.”

The group behind the vandalization told Russian news portal ru.indymedia.org that “we consider ourselves anarcho-punks and this news offended us in the deepest sense.”

The group went on to say that they would not tolerate religious values being imposed on personal freedom.

Members of the group went on to say that they hoped the punks in Aceh would feel inspired and strengthened, hearing that people in a far-off country felt solidarity with their struggle.

“Punk is not a crime. Religion is fascism. Fight for your looks,” one member said.

Sixty-four young people have been held by the Aceh police for the supposed crime of being “punk.” They have not been charged with any crime or brought before a court.

Last week, police took them to the Aceh State Police camp for “re-education.” Mohawks and dyed hair came off as police shaved the men’s heads. The women’s hair was cut short in the fashion of a female police officer.

Deputy mayor of Banda Aceh Illiza Sa’aduddin Djamal supported the crusade against the punk community, telling the community that the punk lifestyle was a social disease that was disturbing the peace.

Aceh ‘Punks’ Arrested for ‘Re-education’

December 13, 2011 by Nurdin Hasan | Jakarta Globe

Banda Aceh. Dozens of young people were being held and punished by Aceh police on Tuesday for the supposed crime of being “punk,” despite not being charged with any crime nor being brought before a court.

The 64 music lovers, some of whom had come from as far as Jakarta and West Java, were arrested by regular and Shariah police as they held a charity concert in Banda Aceh’s Taman Budaya park on Saturday night.

Banda Aceh police took the arrestees on Tuesday afternoon to the Aceh State Police School for “reeducation.” Aceh police chief Ins. Gen. Iskandar Hasan described the punishment awaiting them when they reached the police school in the Seulawah hills, 62 kilometers east of he capital.

“There will be a traditional ceremony. First their hair will be cut. Then they will be tossed into a pool. The women’s hair we’ll cut in the fashion of a female police officer,” Iskander said on Tuesday. “Then we’ll teach them a lesson.”

Iskander denied the punishment constituted a breach of human rights.

“We’ll change their disgusting clothes. We’ll replace them with nice clothes. We’ll give them toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, sandals and prayer gear. It will all be given to them,” he said. “I’ll remind [police] not to breach human rights. We are oriented to educating our community, our nation. This is our country too, right?”

Iskandar said he would invite the Muslim Cleric Council to participate in “restoring their [the arrestees’] right thinking and morals.”

Human rights groups opposed the action.

Evi Narti Zain, executive director of the Aceh Human Rights Coalition, said the police’s action was violent and illegal.

“What is this education? The police’s action is inconsistent because the punks did nothing wrong,” Evi said. “Punk music is their way of expressing themselves. It is normal and is found all around the world. It’s their right to express their freedom. There’s nothing wrong with punk kids.”

Aceh Legal Aid Foundation’s director, Hospinovizal Sabri, said he had tried to get the young people released since their arrest on Saturday night.

“On the night the punks were arrested by the Police and Shariah Police we met with them, and we went again to the police station and spoke to some of them this morning [Tuesday],” Hospinovizal said. “We are working hard to have them released because they have breached no law.”

Hospinovizal said he aimed to take a habeas corpus type action before a judge to have the court force the police to release the young people. “There’s a perception from some quarters in Aceh that they are human rubbish, but it is clear they are innocent and are only expressing their independence in their own way.”

Iskandar said their date of release would “depend on the budget from the regional government.”

Occupy Wall Street-style protest in Indonesia leads to closure of world's largest gold mine

Clashes between protesting Indonesians and security forces at US-owned mine have also left four dead.

Oct. 18, 2011 Global Post

JAKARTA, Indonesia — As the Occupy Wall Street movement spreads like
dominoes, resentment toward corporate greed has led to the deaths of four
Indonesians and the temporary closure of the American-owned Grasberg mine,
one of the world’s largest gold and copper mines, in the remote region of
West Papua.

Workers at the giant mine, which is owned by the U.S.-based
Freeport-McMoran, are on strike for the second month straight. Although
the company says it has managed to hire outsourced workers to prevent any
significant slowdown in production, that all changed on Monday when the
mine halted production for security reasons. Markets, however, have yet to
react to the closure.

Workers at Freeport’s Grasberg mine — which accounts for more than 90
percent of the company’s gold output — receive a minimum of between $1.50
and $3 an hour, the lowest of any Freeport-McMoran operation worldwide.

Video: Occupy movement goes global

“The question is,” asks John Rumkoren, a native Papuan Freeport worker who
has been researching the numbers online, “If Freeport has such high
profits and low production costs, why can’t they pay us the same as they
pay their workers in North and South America and Africa?”

Some 80 percent of the mine’s 12,000 workers have been on strike since
Sept. 15 and say they will continue until their wage demands are met. As
negotiations between the company’s management and its workers have failed
to reach an agreement, the situation has rapidly deteriorated.

In a violent clash between protestors and police last Monday, one Freeport
employee was shot dead and six others were injured. An ambush on Friday,
which police claim was the work of Papuan separatists, resulted in the
death of three others.

For both Papuan workers and the tribes that live around the mine, tensions
that have been brewing for decades appear to have reached a tipping point.
Current strikes are the longest in history, with workers criticizing the
U.S. company for not sharing its profits and having no Papuans on its
management board. In the surrounding villages, tribal elders have publicly
derided Freeport for failing to live up to its promises to give back to
Papuan society.

“We want Freeport to contribute to our lives and develop our society
through education and human-resource development, not through money or the
military,” said Rumkoren, who has been working at Grasberg for the past
decade.

Canada: Where the Occupy movement began

Freeport-McMoran owns more than 90 percent of PT Freeport Indonesia, the
principal operating subsidiary in Indonesia. The Indonesian government
owns the rest.

The local government in Papua has been fighting for a divestment of shares
to local companies, which is required by law after a given period of time.
But the exact divestment amount is still in dispute and the mine remains
controlled by Freeport.

According to Freeport McMoran’s 2010 sustainability report, the company
gave more than 1 percent of its profits ($189 million) to local
communities in its operations around the world. In Papua, this included
HIV training and donations to a number of community programs.

Despite the efforts, for many Papuans the multinational company has become
synonymous with human-rights abuses, inequality and continued poverty, a
situation they are increasingly unwilling to accept.

“Freeport has been in Papua for 44 years, but they have not contributed to
Papuan society at all. Contributions from Freeport only go to the police
and the military and they [police and military] only come and kill us,”
said Rumkoren, who is a member of the Freeport Worker’s Union.

Human-rights groups have voiced concern over why police opened fire at
Monday’s rally. Rumkoren said that workers have been intimidated by
Freeport security during the strikes.

“There is one security guy from America who has intimidated us by slashing
the tires of our cars so the workers cannot get to Timika and have to stay
at the mine and do their work,” he said.

With foreign journalists restricted access to the politically sensitive
region — Papua has long been marked by a struggle for independence — it is
difficult to verify such claims. However, cables released by WikiLeaks
late last year noted that Freeport paid millions to the Indonesian Army to
protect its operations around the Grasberg mine.

“Freeport did whatever they wanted there up until about 1995. They had no
one to oversee them and the military couldn’t care less,” said Denise
Leith, author of “Politics of Power: Freeport in Suharto’s Indonesia.”

Leith said that Freeport essentially entered an isolated hunter-gatherer
society at a time when most Papuans had never seen electricity or a car,
let alone a helicopter.

“But the Indonesian government didn't give a damn about the West Papuans
and just wanted Freeport's money. Freeport wrote its own contract. They
[the government] were just really pleased to get Freeport in there,” Leith
said.

The Grasberg deal was the first big international contract in Indonesia
and was signed by the country’s former authoritarian ruler, General
Suharto, in 1976. Today, Freeport remains the single-largest taxpayer to
the Indonesian government, contributing more than $1 billion in the first
six months of this year.

With Indonesia’s economy thriving on the back of a commodities boom and
vast natural resources, companies such as Freeport have been booking
record profits. But very little of that appears to be trickling down to
the lowest echelons, especially in the poor and underdeveloped region of
Papua.

Analysts say the labor unrest is fueling longstanding socio-political
problems and could ultimately lead to the closure of the mine.

“Many say Papua is a very rich land with poor people. Papuans do not feel
like masters of their own land. If the government and Freeport are not
careful, we could have the same situation as the Bogainville mine in Papua
New Guinea,” said Ikrar Nusa Bakti, a political analyst from the
Indonesian Institute of Sciences.

Operated by Rio Tinto, an Australian and British multinational, Papua New
Guinea’s Bogainville copper mine was forced to close in 1989 after social
unrest led to an armed uprising against the company and the government.

But Grasberg is not the only place disenfranchised Indonesians are voicing
their discontent. Jakarta-based risk consultant Todd Elliott said that
growing inequality is driving other resource-driven conflicts across the
country.

“We see this everywhere, in Sulawesi, in Kalimantan. There is a huge
wealth gap and it’s getting wider. Indonesia’s wealth is not evenly
distributed. We have seen it in attacks on other mining operations that
promised to employ a certain number of people and build infrastructure,
but they didn’t, so the locals attacked them,” he said.

Protestors in Papua have blocked the road to the mine with heavy
machinery, and a pipeline used to channel gold and copper to a port has
been cut in several places, which led to the mine’s closure.

Rumkoren, who is working with activists to update information about the
Freeport victims on their Facebook page, says he and others are
determined.

“We will close Freeport until James Moffett comes,” he said, referring to
Freeport-McMoran’s chairman.

“If we don’t close Freeport we will all be finished because of the police
and the military… It is our right and our responsibility to do this.”

Indonesia torture video soldiers jailed

By NINIEK KARMINI, Associated Press Jan 24, 2011

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Three Indonesian soldiers captured on video torturing
suspected separatists were sentenced Monday up to 10 months in prison,
angering rights activists who slammed the lenient ruling as a sham
underlining the military's impunity.

Critics said the verdict showed that Indonesia, which only recently
emerged from decades of a military-led dictatorship, still had a long way
to go toward implementing democratic reform.

Footage posted on YouTube last year showed three men in uniform in the
restive eastern region of Papua burning the genitals of one unarmed
suspected separatist, who lay bound and naked on the ground, and then
running a knife across the neck of another.

One of the victims later said in a video made available by New York-based
Human Rights Watch that they endured three more days of torture after
their interrogation at a military checkpoint.

"I thought I was going to die," said Anggen Pugu Kiwo, 50, adding that
soldiers wrapped barbed wire wrapped around his legs, stubbed cigarettes
out in his face, and beat him repeatedly with a wooden stick in the neck
and legs.

"At one point I prayed they would just shoot me," he said.

The case sparked international outrage, prompting the Indonesian
government to make a rare acknowledgment of military abuses, and promising
that justice would be served.

However, in a court martial trial that wrapped up Monday in Papua's
provincial capital, Jayapura, the three soldiers were sentenced to between
eight and 10 months in jail, for the relatively minor offense of
disobeying orders to respect the rights of civilians and refrain from
violence in the field.

"They tortured two men who had no identification documents at a military
post," presiding judge Adil Karokaro said, but added that the soldiers
deserved some leniency because they had confessed to their crimes and
shown remorse.

Government and military officials said the two-week trial was free and
fair, and called on all parties to respect the decision.

"There was no intervention from any institution. The decision fulfilled a
sense of justice both for the defendant and the victim," military
spokesman Rear Admiral Iskandar Sitompul told The Associated Press.

But rights activists slammed the sentences as a mockery of justice.

"It was a military tribunal," said Rafendi Djamin of the Jakarta-based
Human Rights Working Group, adding that the victims didn't show up for the
trial because they feared for their lives.

"The judges and prosecutors always side with the military ... everyone
knows that."

Indonesia, a nation of more than 237 million people, has made tremendous
strides toward democracy since former dictator Suharto was ousted just
over a decade ago, but it remains highly sensitive to ongoing separatist
struggles in Papua and the Molucca islands.

The United States, which last year lifted a decade-old ban on military
assistance to a notoriously violent Indonesian commando unit, closely
monitored the trials.

"We are very concerned that the Indonesian military charged the soldiers
only with disobeying orders and that the sentences handed down ... do not
reflect the seriousness of the abuses depicted in the video," Paul
Belmont, a U.S. Embassy spokesman, said Tuesday.

"We have expressed these concerns to the Indonesian government," he said,
adding that Washington does welcome, however, the transparent judicial
process and statements from top leaders that rights abuses by the armed
forces would not be tolerated.
