Mountain
Live: The Road Goes Ever On (Expanded Edition) – ICON 1048

Windfall assembled this outstanding live document of the original version of the band Mountain following their breakup. The album features a couple of tracks from their landmark performance at the Woodstock festival and the epic centerpiece of the album, a majestic extended version of Nantucket Sleighride.

Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi, Corky Laing and Steve Knight were riding their first wave of success with their first two studio albums when these performances were documented. This version of the band could flat-out cook and the extended cuts show that they knew how to jam with a sense of power and dynamics. The performances were mastered from the original tapes by Vic Anesini and the liner notes by Ralph Chapman place the whole project in the proper perspective. The album is fleshed out by an extended bonus performance of Stormy Monday that was culled from another early seventies festival performance.

The Guess Who
So Long, Bannatyne (Expanded Edition) – ICON 1013

The Guess Who proved they could weather a significant personnel change with 1970’s triumphant Share The Land. The 1971 follow-up, So Long, Bannatyne saw the band branching out, embracing more eclectic and less polished and commercial material, much of it with a considerably darker hue than the band’s earlier material and heavily influenced by John Lennon’s visceral Plastic Ono Band.

A fascinating lyrical continuity emerges that reveals a band and its principal writers burdened by success, cynical, tormented; the result being a kind of ad hoc concept record centering around themes of desperation, anger, disillusionment and resignation, topics frontman Burton Cummings would continue to explore throughout the rest of The Guess Who’s lifespan.

The Guess Who
American Woman (Deluxe Expanded Edition) – ICON 1043

The Guess Who’s most successful album begins with the one-two punch of the title track and No Time, the first single from the album. The original album sustained a chart run that lasted for more than a year, produced three hit singles and sent the band’s career to new heights. Curiously following the successes came such turmoil, that after an aborted attempt at the next album, founding member Randy Bachman found himself on the outside of the band looking in.

This 2 CD expanded edition of the album features single edits, unreleased tracks from the album sessions and different takes on album tracks as well as material that was attempted but not released. The second disc is comprised of the tracks that were meant to be released as the follow-up album.

Canned Heat
Cookbook: The Best of Canned Heat (Expanded Edition) – ICON 1047

The Canned Heat Cookbook was originally released in 1969 to recap the initial chart success of this talented group that was based in Los Angeles and steeped in the blues tradition. The album is expanded by the addition of their 1970 hit Let’s Work Together (in true stereo), which essentially makes this collection a best of Canned Heat.

The album also features the 1968 Top 20 hits, On The Road Again and Going Up The Country, which was also featured in the Woodstock movie and soundtrack album.
