On this date in 1981, R.E.M. released their debut single, "Radio Free Europe". It was backed by "Sitting Still". Both songs appeared on their album debut, Murmur, in 1983, but "Radio Free Europe" was a re-recorded version. The single did not chart the first time around but reached the #78 spot in the U.S. when re-released in 1983. The Athens, Georgia power pop band became a huge mainstream rock act in the mid-80's. They are still active.

Some Product: Carri On Sex Pistols

On this date in 1979, Sex Pistols (or the owners of their name) released an album called Some Product: Carri On Sex Pistols. No new music. No songs at all. It was an album filled with interviews and radio ads. Despite there being nothing to release as a single, the album reached the #6 spot on the U.K. albums chart. Of course, the band had really broken up in January of 1978 when Johnny Rotten left the band but there was still blood to be squeezed out of the name.

Spherical Objects - Past And Parcel

On this date in 1978, Spherical Objects released their debut album, Past And Parcel. There were no singles released from the album. The Manchester, England post-punk/experimental disbanded in 1981 after releasing four albums and evidently left the music business. The only news of its band members since the break up is that lead singer Steve Solamar had a gender change operation. He now answers to the name Shirley.
