I'm been a huge fan of AC/DC since the 1970's, particularly the Bon Scott era, and have read a great number of books on the band. Mick Wall's " AC/DC - Hell Ain't a Bad Place to Be" is hands down the most definitive, comprehensive tale of the "Thunder From Down Under" that I've ever read. From their earliest tours when they were just starting out playing the dirtiest, seediest pubs to their conquests of Australia, UK, Europe, and North America, Mick gives you a tour by tour/album by album account of how they became one of the biggest bands in the world. "Let There Be Rock"!

I've read many articles and books about one of my favorite bands AC/DC. This was by far the best. I thought I knew it all when it came to the boys, but Mick Wall has done an incredible job showing us the real thing warts and all. This bio really functions as two parter in a sense by heavily focusing on Bon Scott himself, and Mick Wall could have probably created his own bio with all the material presented here. I did think that Mick got a bit too much in the weeds with exploring the pasts of some minor characters for a bit too long. He also brushed past AC/DC's mid 80s--present era quite quickly, but I'd by this book again in a heart beat. Oh, and the crazy Bon stories are worth the price of the book.

I am a fan of AC/DC and of rock bios. I'm also a fan of Mick Wall as a rock journalist. I've read this band's story by other wroters, and while the material may not be fresh and new, Wall's presentation makes it seem so. While other writers of the rock bio genre fall into the trappings of myth and sensationalism, Wall does a great job of presenting the material in a fun and enlightening way, while at the same time humanizing his subjects. The best part is that it reads like a fun conversation with a learned fellow music fan. More than worthwhile to purchase and read.

Great band but the writer, Mick Wall clearly has personal problems with members of the group especially the young brothers. The constant theme is that the Youngs are clannish and suspicious of outsiders which obviously include Mr Wall.

Detailed and chronological and yet still has a narrative which holds your attention. The last part of the book brings the whole myth crashing down quite abruptly though. Of course we all know what Mick didn't, and that is about Malcolm Young's illness. This is the second book I have read of Mick's and I will read more. He isn't starry eyed but he is realistic and gives credit where it is due. A complete and bare faced appreciation of both AC/DC and the music business. As Snailpaced Slim of that wonderful group, The Hamsters, said " It isn't the Music business, it's the music Business."
Don't read this if you just want mindless praise for a favourite band, read it because you love music.

This is a very good book about AC/DC. I don't write a lot of reviews, so it will be a short one.
Mick Wall is a fine writer, and I got to know his writing through reading Kerrang!magazine in the 80's.
You can tell, that he first and foremost is a fan of the Bon Scott-era, but so am I, so why waste time and place one stuff regarding the not so good years/albums in the AC/DC-world, but everything is covered, more or less. I agree with Wall, that the last really classic AC/DC-album was "Back In Black".
Good to read about Robert John "Mutt" Lange as well, since there's not much information about him elsewhere (that I'm aware of). Best producer ever!!
I'm looking forward to reading Mick Wall's books about Black Sabbath and The Doors as well, and hope to see him writing books about Cheap Trick, Van Halen and Jethro Tull in the future, since there are no good books about those bands around. Which is pretty strange.
