Australia’s window tinting laws

Downward Chevron

Within Australia, the window tint darkness is measured in Visible Light Transmission (VLT). It is illegal to have any percentage of VLT on your windscreen. You do have the option of having your front-side, back-side and rear windows tinted. These limits are applicable to vehicles with no existing tint. The legal VLT in different states do differ, so be aware and double-check the legal limits before tinting your windows.

State/Territory Windshield Front-side Back-side Rear
ACT 0% 35% 20% 20%
NSW 0% 35% 20% 20%
NT 0% 35% 15% 15%
QLD 0% 35% 20% 20%
SA 0% 35% 20% 20%
TAS 0% 35% 20% 20%
VIC 0% 35% 35% 35%
WA 0% 35% 20% 20%

These legal limits can change over time, so please check the Australian law before tinting your windows.

Does the cost vary based on location?

Downward Chevron

The cost of car window tinting should be very similar across all states and cities. The main influence on pricing will be the size of your vehicle and the specific tint film you choose to install. Vehicles with larger windows or complex shapes will naturally require more effort, and as such, the price may be higher than average. Opting for premium tints such as ceramic or reflective tints will also increase the price.

Labour charges can vary between different businesses. Mobile window tinting is another option that may also be slightly higher in cost. Oneflare customers were quoted the following for the darkest legal window tint:

State/Territory Averaged reported cost
New South Wales $250
Queensland $270
Victoria $300
Western Australia $300

How to hire a car window tinter

Downward Chevron

Before hiring a window tinter, it is a good idea to get at least three different quotes. Not all tinting companies use the same products, but they will usually have a three-tier product offering with basic, mid-range and high-end tint options. You should compare the products, pricing, and customer reviews so that you can make an informed hiring decision.

Car window tinting can be done at a convenient location of your choice by mobile window tinting companies. Alternatively, you may wish to enjoy the added security and convenience of visiting a physical store. Purchasing from larger and reputable window tinting companies can give you added confidence and security, but private and small business operators may offer more personalised service and potentially better value depending on individual circumstances.

All window tinting work should come with a warranty against product defects. Many window tinting businesses offer a lifetime guarantee and national service, but some businesses may only offer a limited warranty.

Tips on how to save money on car window tinting

Downward Chevron

Tip #1: It is important to consider your reasons for tinting your car windows. If you are simply looking for some additional protection against the harmful effects of UV rays, you may wish to opt for a basic or clear tint film. Darker tints, reflective tints, metalized film, crystalline tint, hybrid tint, and ceramic tints will be more expensive, but they offer increased privacy, better heat blocking, and UV protection and long-term durability.

Tip #2: If your car already has tints installed, it is a good idea to ask for the cost of tinting removal during your quote. Tint removal requires more time and resources, and window tinters will charge an additional fee to account for this.
