Mike Gabriel was raised in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Carnegie Mellon University, where he studied creative writing and film. It was there that he was introduced to the work of David Goodis when François Truffaut’s Shoot the Piano Player was screened during the noir segment of a film history course. While living in Pittsburgh he worked primarily as a projectionist, wrote film scripts and directed a feature film.
In 1996 he purchased a theremin and began performing and recording with a garage-punk band called The Mount McKinleys (Get Hip Records). He moved to San Francisco in 1999 and began work in graphic design, first at advertising agency Foote, Cone & Belding and currently at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners. He has created posters, fliers and t-shirts for various musical performers, and most recently, designed the record sleeves for bands The Mooney Suzuki, The Paybacks and The Come Ons.
He currently handles the lead vocals and lyric writing responsibilities for the rock and roll band, The Sermon. “Tender Sin” appears on The Sermon’s debut lp/cdVolume, released in 2004 on Alternative Tentacles Records. Lyrics reprinted with permission.
