Maverique

Etymology
Maverique comes from the English word ’maverick’ meaning ‘an unorthodox or independent-minded person’ or ‘unorthodox’ and the French suffix ‘-ique’ meaning ‘similar to’ or ‘like.’ Pronounced mav-uh-REEK or mav-REEK.
Origins
Maverique was coined on June 1st 2014 by Vesper H. (they/them), also known as @queerascat on tumblr. Their definition for maverique at the time was “a non-binary gender characterized by an unconventional and unothodox internal sense of self and the interrelationship between that sense of self and society.” They created the word maverique because they had been using the word neutrois to describe their gender, but found they incongruencies between their gender and the neutrality of neutrois; they wanted a word that did not imply neutrality, so they made it themself.
There were some criticisms that maverique seems too similar to ‘third gender‘ and being too reliant on “conventional / modern [Western binary] gender.” This led to Vesper reworking the definition to keep maverique from being defined by “outside conventional gender.”
Current Usage
Maverique is currently defined as “a gender characterized by autonomy and inner conviction regarding a sense of self that is entirely independent of male/masculinity, female/femininity or anything which derives from the two while still being neither without gender nor of a neutral gender.” It is open to people of any culture, race, or ethnicity. Maverique is specifically a gender identity and is not related to one’s sex, dysphoria, or transitioning status.
Maverique is a gender that places emphasis on individuality and autonomy, meaning that there is no specific way of dressing or acting that is associated with being a maverique.
Symbolism and Language
On June 15th 2014, Vesper posted the maverique pride flag (seen above). There are titles and language specifically for maveriques, but using them is not required to be maverique nor inherently used by all maveriques.
[Image description: a proposed maverique gender symbol inspired by astrological symbols for planets. The entire symbol is one color (black). The symbol consists of a ring with a vertical line down the middle, with a dot in the center of the line and ring. Perpendicular to the line in the ring, there are two horizontal lines with one coming off either side of the ring. Each horizontal line has a tail going in an opposite direction, wrapping about one third of the way around the symbol. The tail on the left line goes up and to the right and the tail on the right goes down and to the left. End description.]
This is a suggested astrologically-inspired gender symbol for maveriques, suggested by now deactivated tumblr user @sneer in February 2017. The maverique symbol incorporates the sun symbol (a ring with a dot in the center), which had been previously suggested as a maverique symbol but criticised in that the sun is associated with binary genders in different cultures. The comet symbol was also suggested as a maverique symbol and criticised as it is also used as a general non-binary symbol.
