Gender Creative: an umbrella term used to refer to individuals, generally youth, that expand notions of gender, expression and identity beyond what is perceived as the expected gender norms for their society and/or context.

Also called Gender Expansive.

Etymology

From English, literally meaning “an experience relating to or involving the imagination or original ideas”. The term was coined by Dr. Diane Ehrensaft, a developmental and clinical psychologist in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Director of Mental Health and founding member of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center in 2011.

Flag

There are two flags associated with the term gender creative. [[[((((Suicide TW))))]]] The oldest flag I could find was created by Leslie Ellen Krause, tumblr user sorcerykid, in 2015. (Note: searching Leslie’s deadname, which will not be given here, reveals they are still alive.) Here’s the meaning they ascribe to the flag’s stripes and colors:

The pride flag is constructed of two exterior lavender stripes in opposition, a composite of the pink and blue stripes found in the transgender pride flag and an interior white stripe one-fifth the proportion to the remainder. The lavender stripes representing the blurring of binary gender roles and expectations whereas the white stripe represents the questioning of such social norms.

In addition to the above, Leslie posted the flag with a concise color meaning on each stripe. The top stripe represents those who are female-identified, the bottom stripe represents those who are male-identified, and the center white stripe represents freedressing. Freedressing was described by Leslie like so:

freedressing is the tacit acknowledgement that clothing is free of gender. In the broadest sense, it opposes the policing of masculine and feminine gender expression and the systematic indoctrination of binary gender roles and expectations. It subverts the stereotypes and defies the labels of Western fashion.

Note: Leslie is very open about their fetishism in adult online spaces, which will not be linked to here, stating they are interested in ageplay, as well as a leggings and panty fetishism. Since the term gender creative is most often used to refer to children and young adolescents, I did not feel it was appropriate or in good taste to use Leslie’s flag for this post, even though it was the first-known flag for the term. This note serves to inform those who may not be comfortable using their flag to represent themselves upon learning this information, for any reason.

A second gender creative flag, featured above in this post, was created by a LGBTA Wikia user going by “Willow” in 2020, however, the individual that created and added it to the page is user cryptocrew. The flag consists of three horizontal lines, that, from top to bottom, are blue, pink and purple. In the center are four hexagons nested within each other that are yellow, green, dark grey and light grey, respectively. In the center of the hexagons are  a rhombus, and finally, a square, which are light red and dark red, respectively. In the words of “Willow”:

The light blue, pink, and purple represents children/youth and gender roles/the gender binary, yellow represents genders outside the binary, green represents unique genders, dark grey represents being void of gender, light grey represents fluidity, and the red boxes represent leaving the box/thinking outside the box.

The original image of the flag is small and pixelated, so I created a high-quality version that is being used in this post. Enjoy!

Gender Outlaw: a person who refuses to be defined by conventional definitions of Male and Female.

Etymology

A term coined by Kate Bornstein in their 1994 book of the same name. More information on Kate can be found here.

According to The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Gender and Sexuality Studies:

gender outlaws are the quintessential rule‐breakers when it comes to gender conformity. They break rules on how people are supposed to look, how people can act or participate in which spaces, and rules about who can be attracted to whom; all often simply by existing. The refusal to be labelled and identified in accordance with a highly policed, binary system of male and female, as well as refusing to moderate behavior to align with sex‐role stereotyping is common amongst gender outlaws. Historically, being differently gendered publicly or acting outside the dictates of behavior attributed to gender assignation potentially lead to life‐threatening situations; however, the increasingly visible political and social challenge of gender stereotypes and a naturalness gender status quo exemplifies the modern gender outlaw. These challenges rarely mean advocating for a genderless society however, most often encompassing and legitimizing an understanding that there are more than two sex‐aligned genders.

(Here is the A - Z index full of plenty of other subjects).

Flag

I searched for some sort of flag for Gender Outlaw, but I was unable to find one. I went ahead and created a flag cause it lacked one, but also because I personally connect to this concept. The flag is predominately white, with a thin, central, horizontal stripe, consisting of six, solid colored lines of the same size. At the top and bottom of the flag is a solid, horizontal black stripe. The flag has the following meanings:

  • The whiteness of the flag is represents nonbinary and/or genderqueer identities as well as distance from the gender binary.
  • The central stripe contains six colors: purple, yellow, mint green, peach, lime green and strawberry red. This stripe represents diversity of nonbinary gender. The stripe contains contains all colors, except for pink and blue.
  • The two black stripes represent rejection of gender norms, non-normativity, gender non-conformation, visible queerness, relationship anarchy, genderfuckery, etc.

Pondusgender- a fluid gender that absorbs genders (and aesthetics) around it to make something new; that something is profound, deep, and infinite, yet never complete/void of something else. Someone who is pondusgender rejects alignment and tends to present in a manner that “clashes” with gender norms or others’ expectations.

From the Greek “Pondus” meaning 1. Force 2. Gravity 3. Importance 4. Mass 5. Value or Values 6. Absorb

☙ Aesthete (Gender Identity)

Aesthete is a non-binary gender made by us as a word for our identity. This identity is based off of aestheticism, where the focus is on beauty and what one appreciates more than societal standards and beliefs. Aestheticism itself is considered “art [that] exists for the sake of its beauty alone, and that it need serve no political, didactic, or other purpose”.

Aesthete as a gender identity is someone who is less focused on their gender or what is perceived as their gender and is focused on being whatever they please and looking however they please. Aesthete people generally don’t have a specific way to identify as they can present and feel many ways, but regardless are focused on an identity around being whatever pleases them, both visually and mentally.

Aesthete people also generally like to present in a way that follows this, dressing up and being visually appealing to themselves and others as a way of expressing themselves. Any set of pronouns can be used, but a set of pronouns specific to this gender is ae / aem / aes / aemself.

The flag consists of four colors in total:

Green is a color often used to represent luxury as well as life.

Teal / turquoise is used to represent sophistication, creativity, and the self.

Red represents passion, romance, and a wide variety of intense emotions.

White roses are a symbolism of romance, but white also symbolizes perfection.

Together, the flag is a symbol for pride in oneself and one’s identity and appearance. While fairly egocentric, it emphasizes that our identities and the way we present is for ourselves.

Masculinized Pride Flag

beyond-mogai-pride-flags

Masculinization is a broad term, but when we are into LGBTQ+ terms, it often prescribes someone who is fluctuating from an unmasculine gender state to a masculinity. So that “masculinized” or “masculinised” is almost like the polar opposite of “feminized”, “sissification”, “effeminacy” and “neutralized”, someone who is transitioning from non-masc to masc. It’s a subset of GNC (gender non-conforming) and sometimes of transgender too.

A gender marking a connection to wild animals + nature, and detachment from societal norms and the gender binary. Largely related to neurodivergents who not only feel disconnected from other humans as a whole, but also struggle to fully understand or label their gender identity.

qupha (ku-fa or kyu-fa)

a gender which can be described as ‘woman’ but not ‘girl’. it is genderqueer/gnc, and not necessarily feminine in any way, though it can be if a qupha sees fit. it is large, loud, and slightly monstrous. it is also soft and warm, for the right people. it is associated with the roles of the mother, the queen and the sorceress; with fire and earth and water; with passion and sensuality and tenderness… but ultimately, only a qupha can truly define what it means and why they are one.

So, since I’m still seeing this around MOGAI (and adjacent) spaces, here’s your friendly reminder that f*mboy is a transmisogynistic slur, and if you try to reclaim it as a TME, you’re being transmisogynistic.

There are plenty of other terms you can choose from to describe yourself as a feminine boy. Just to make it easy for you, here are some of the terms I know:

Feel free to add on, but don’t try to to dispute this post if you’re TME. For once, can y’all just listen to transfems?
