Attempting to Fix Post Comments on Themes

Hi everyone! Today I wanted to look at why some posts look absolutely horrible when they’re riddled with comments. To remind you of what it may look like (in a rather tame case), I’ll add an image below. Please be careful for the sight may be utterly horrendous.

Basically the more comments, the more piled on those blockquotes get, which push the images out of the post, which looks really terrible, and makes your blog look really bad, and you know.

Unfortunately, this is what Tumblr defaults their posts to, which is weird since they changed the look in the dashboard. But nonetheless! I have arrived to propose a new (or I guess…familiar) look:

This was a bit tricky to pull off so I’m not sure if it will break other posts or not, and so I’m not sure if I want to just update this into revamped themes now. I’m considering adding an option where you can change this to the default way Tumblr renders it if needed. What do you guys think? Any thoughts?

Introducing ver. 3.00 themes!

Hiya Tumblr users, I’m excited to announce that I’m very tired cause I’ve been working pretty hard on figuring out the best way to clean up my themes. Especially my old themes, ech. Recently I just put together a nice little sort of theme “template” for myself to use. I’ll be using it from now on for all new themes, and for the next little while, will be using it to update all of my existing themes.

Here’s a general list of things it will have (not for every single theme but for most, some themes can have some weird limitations sometimes):

• So much cleaner, wow.
• Smoother animations.
• Lightboxes (those things where you click on a photo in a post and it pops up so you can see it better)
• 540px option wow.
• No more options with broken switches! They’ve all been switched to drop down select options! (probably my favourite update cause man do we all hate those broken switches)
• More responsive (some themes don’t have much room for being responsive, but I’ll make it at least not look terrible on smaller screens).
  
• And honestly just so much better and cleaner code (so I uh…don’t have to cringe when showing it to future potential employers).
• And some other random things I feel could be nice as options.

Some of the newer themes might not seem to benefit too much from this but they still definitely will, and older themes will benefit a lot.

Expect the update for Theme 19 to drop later tonight. Theme 17 will be the next to be updated. The rest of the order will be by popular demand. So tell me which themes you wanna see updated and any features you want to see with them!

I also just thought I’d drop a quick update since I’ve been somewhat inactive for a while. A while ago I got a job in web development and because of certain circumstances I’ll be quitting that job at the end of April and taking some time off before going back to the good ol’ full time job life.

That means I’ll have lots of spare time, that will most likely be spent doing other development things outside of Tumblr, but also for my Tumblr themes as well.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably seen me be all omgmythemesarewrittensopoorlytheyneedtoberewrittenaaaaa so I’ll definitely be wanting to do some of that. Don’t wanna link this blog to potential employers where it looks like my cat slapped my keyboard a few times in between the development process. (’:

A bit later down the road, probably within a couple months or so, I might ask for a couple of beta testers to help me test out these rewritten themes by just adding them and any fixes I come up with to their blogs. Mostly cause I know how much people love infinite scroll and so I’d at least like to try and see if I can get it working. Currently I do have something going but it’s quite buggy so I would like to test it with some actual blogs made by actual people who use this site.

I’d also like to start porting some of my themes to Wordpress! Not all of them, just the ones that would work as Wordpress themes. I’d love to become a WP developer so I think that’ll be a nice start.

In the meantime, I’ll be here to fix any major bugs and answer any questions. Just don’t forget to read that FAQ please.

Hey guys, I just wanted to put a quick note out there. When you guys are customizing your themes, please do NOT steal others’ code to use in your own theme. As a general guideline, if the owner isn’t making the code public for your use, and you view the source code on their page to copy paste blocks of code into your own theme, there’s a good chance they don’t want you to do that.

If you do want to customize your theme beyond what options the theme makers give you (some theme makers don’t want you to do this, make sure you check, I allow you to customize my themes however you like), please either learn the web languages you need to write the code on your own, or consider asking a theme maker for a commission.
