This is one of the reasons I disagree with fox sanctuaries rescuing foxes from fur farms.
Foxes bred for their fur have never really been bred with health in mind, and can have a number of severe health problems as a result. Most foxes are culled before they’re a year old, so long term health simply isn’t a concern. This means that foxes rescued from fur farms often end up having to be euthanised quite young due to their failing health. Regardless of your thoughts on fur farming, rescuing an animal that’s probably not destined to live very long and will be in a lot of pain isn’t really doing that animal any favours. It’s the same with things like broiler chickens. People try to rescue them but they just end up suffering because they have not been bred to live long, healthy lives.
A lot of these sanctuaries also buy their foxes from fur farms, so are not true rescues. By purchasing animals they are helping to keep the farms they claim to be against in business. Same goes with things like buying dogs from puppy mills. Yeah it’s sad for those animals but ‘rescuing’ animals from bad situations by buying them just makes the situation worse long term.
