Kahaniyaaañ khti haiñ kalakariyañ

letters-to-lgbt-kids:

My dear lgbt+ kids,

Math is blue and English is red. Do you agree?

No matter if you do: the question makes no sense. Unless your school has a strict color code for your folders, there is no logical reason why Math should be any specific color. And yet, you probably have some intuitive opinion on it.

“Math is blue” just feels right to me - and it feels deeply wrong for some other people, even though neither of us can explain why. Some people even have a strong emotional reaction to it and feel irrationally angry at someone assigning the “wrong” color to a subject.

This is just one example that shows that our relationship with colors can be so personal and emotional. We assign meanings to colors, can feel connected to or comforted by a specific color, can link a color to a specific emotion etc.

And what lgbt-related thing has a whole bunch of color combinations? Pride flags.

Pride flags have a history and a meaning - and you can still have a emotional reaction to them that you can’t really explain.

I ocassionally get messages like “I am bi but I don’t feel any connection to the bi flag” or “I am asexual but the rainbow flag feels much more me than the asexual flag” and the people sending me those messages usually sound like they feel very guilty about their “weird” emotional response to some colors - I just want to use this letter to tell you: This is not a weird thing you do - it’s just one of those wonderfully weird human things. It’s nothing to feel guilty about at all.

With all my love,

Your Tumblr Dad

Hi

So I'm a desi. And I'm not very politically aware. But a lot of shit going on(I guess the social media news was the final tipping point) in the past 5-7 years(I think) has made me concerned. But I wanna educate myself. Do you have any resources to suggest? Books/Movies/Documentaries/Podcasts/Articles or anything?

Thank you!

Hii Nonnie! I hope you had an amazing dayyy

The thing is that I am still learning as well, but here are some books, that I really like, India After Gandhi was nice a lot of people suggested it, then there was Listening To Grasshoppers by Arundhati Roy. Alsooo I really really like George Orwell, and how he highlights how every democracy is prone to falling into an authoritarian regime even tho books and essays are ages old you can always draw parallels with our current situation lol scary ik. Check out his books and essays.

But at the same time if you want to understand the ground reality, I would suggest you follow political discourses and debates but try not to be influenced by them so much. Check out some Youtubers, Akash Banerjee, Dhruv Rathee and there’s this new-ish channel called Soch by Mohak Mangal which might be helpful.

Check out articles by The Wire (they do lean towards left ig, but they’re still faaarrr better than the mainstream media). If you’re looking for neutrality then check out Vox.

Oh also keep an eye out for articles by Arundhati Roy, needless to say I really do like her alot.

Edit: how the hell did i forget Hassan Minhaj my beloved

May I add scoopwhoop unscripted and the swaddle for amazing news and women’s history videos? Also there’s the Quint for awesome short stories and news updates

Swaddle, yes!! Also a lot of people recommended following The Hindu, Rana Ayyub and other accounts associated with them on twitter.

(Im reading 1984 mainly to get some hope that yeah ok someone gets it🥲 also its just a really good book)
