I’d like ao3 to know that I love and appreciate its service to the fan community
@villagermain Please point to where I stated any of this. The post you see is literally what I said and what I meant, verbatim. If ao3 were actually hosting things that were illegal, how would they still be a) as popular as they are and b) still operating???
Moreover, ao3 does not actively support hosting illegal content (because they’d like to continue to exist on the internet), and if you ever see illegal content (I.e. pictures of REAL CHILDREN in sexual situations because writing underage xyz fic is not illegal) REPORT IT.
If you don’t like ao3 and the way it operates, ignore the goddamn post and don’t use ao3.
honestly what do these people think AO3 is? The dark web???
First of all, AO3 is awesome and I’m firmly against censorship, and I think people should write whatever fucking fiction they desire. Nobody’s making you read it.
That said, this is a digression, but it’s something that I’ve noticed in a few different posts by antis recently: It is creeping me out the way they’ve taken to equating “Disgusting” with “Illegal” in their rhetoric, because it parallels some of the horrible shit going on in the world outside of people who think you should feel bad for reading about sex.
I’m having some difficulty verbalizing it.
“That’s ILLEGAL!!!11!!” is not the argument you make to prove something is bad. (And again, said fanfiction is not illegal, nor should it be, and read and write whatever the hell you want.)
Legality=/=Morality
Plenty of laws are unjust.
Sometimes what’s “Legal” and what’s moral and correct and right are complete OPPOSITES.
Shipping isn’t morality, but whether or not something is legal shouldn’t be the deciding factor in whether it’s okay.
Lots of things are legal that are really fucking terrible.
Lots of things that are illegal aren’t bad, and shouldn’t be illegal.
There are places in the world where posting queer stories on the internet is actually illegal, and that is fucked up.
Or “It’s okay to dehumanize people who are in prison, because they broke the law” or “Well torture is okay because they might be a terrorist” or “Well they came here illegally”.
(It is NOT OKAY to treat people like that. No matter what.)
The motherfucking concentration camps in this country are currently legal. That doesn’t make it okay.
Activists are being arrested for protesting said concentration camps, the activists are still doing the right thing.
But it’s disturbing as all fuck that that idea of “This is illegal”=“This is disgusting”=““This is objectively bad and if you do it/read it/etc you are A Bad Person, and it is okay for people to hurt you” is so prominent.
Once you start to equate legality and morality, you’re saying “Well, if someone changes the law, then suddenly this thing becomes okay”. And it does not fucking work like that.
