Born, raised, and still living in Fort Worth, Texas, multimedia painter Vernon Fisher is best known for his multilayered compositions, in which disparate images are superimposed upon one another. Quietly satirical, Vernon chooses his appropriations carefully, for both their graphic elegance and historical symbolism. He frequently uses maps and magazine photojournalism for background, allowing memorable American iconography seemingly to float atop: Mickey Mouse, men in blackface, a mushroom cloud. Vernon’s work is in the private collections of over 40 museums worldwide, and he has exhibited everywhere from New Delhi to Dusseldorf.
