Netflix Could Break an 85-Year Record at the Oscars in 2021

Netflix Could Break an 85-Year Record at the Oscars in 2021
Netflix could make Oscars history.

Netflix’s arsenal of content this year could give the streamer the most best picture nominations from any studio in history, a record held by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which scored five nods at the ninth Academy Awards in 1937. It may even net the streaming giant its first best picture win after falling short with the likes of Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and Alfonso Cuaron’s “Roma.”

MGM achieved the feat when the Academy was nominating 10 films in the best picture category. “The Great Ziegfeld” was the big winner, taking home three statues. It was joined by other films released in 1936: “Libeled Lady,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “San Francisco” and “A Tale of Two Cities.” At the time, MGM was the undisputed heavyweight in Hollywood as the home to top talents such as Shirley Temple, Clark Gable, Judy Garland, Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn and many more. ‘Freaky’ Repeats as Winner of Quiet U.S. Box Office With $1.2 Million

‘Freaky’ Repeats as Winner of Quiet U.S. Box Office With $1.2 Million
Body-swap horror comedy “Freaky” repeated as the winner of a seriously subdued U.S. box office with $1.2 million at 2,057 locations in North America during the Friday-Sunday weekend.

The Universal and Blumhouse Productions’ movie stars Vince Vaughn as a serial killer and Kathryn Newton as a low-profile high schooler who inadvertently switch bodies on Friday the 13th. “Freaky” has taken in $5.6 million in its first 10 days amid the reluctance of many moviegoers to return to multiplexes until a Covid-19 vaccine is available.

Universal noted Sunday that the theatrical box office continues to be impaired due to a notable reduction in the number of theaters in North America, as the domestic theatrical footprint has shrunk to roughly 2,800 open locations from 3,400 last weekend.

The performance of “Freaky” contrasts sharply with the same weekend a year ago when Disney launched “Frozen II” with $130 million and overall North American business totaled $206 million, according to Comscore.

It opted for a rescheduled hybrid 35th edition which would serve those either unable or afraid to travel and those without an internet connection in Mexico.

“We struck a deal with Canal 44 to have them air some of our films,” said festival director Estrella Araiza, who is adamant that despite the challenges and complications, the film community will prevail in the end. “We have to believe in cinema,” she declared. Outdoor screenings and restricted indoor cinema screenings are on the schedule while most of the master classes and conferences are online.

Ficg was pushed from its traditional March dates to the fall, where it’s now been running over Nov. 20-27.

Its inauguration on Friday Nov.

‘Soul,’ ‘Monster Hunter’ Set December Release Dates in China Cinemas
Pixar’s “Soul” and video game adaptation “Monster Hunter” are set to hit the big screen in China in December.

The hotly anticipated “Soul” may have decided to skip cinemas in the Covid-19-ravaged U.S. for Disney Plus, but it will screen in Chinese theaters from Christmas Day, Dec. 25. Disney currently has no plans to launch its streaming service in China, where such platforms are strictly policed by government authorities.

Inventive, family-friendly Pixar offerings have seen strong box office numbers in China in the past, notably with “Coco,” which defied the ruling Communist Party’s unofficial censorship of content featuring ghosts to become the country’s 20th highest grossing foreign film of all time, with earnings of $189 million,.

Onward,” however, fell a bit flat when it screened in mid-August in newly reopened Chinese cinemas as they started to revive in the wake of Covid-19. Caps on ticket sales and
