Set up your Android Auto app

If you're using Android Auto for the first time, here are some steps to get started:

Step 1. Prepare your phone & car
  1. Make sure your phone meets the minimum requirements.
  2. Confirm that your car is compatible with Android Auto and that Android Auto is turned on in your car's settings. If you're not sure, contact your local car dealer.
  3. Ensure your phone has a strong and fast cellular data connection. 

Step 2. Connect your phone

Before you connect your phone for the first time, turn on your car. Make sure your car is in park (P) and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.
  1. Plug a USB cable into your vehicle’s USB port and plug the other end of the cable into your Android phone. 
  2. Your phone might ask you to download the Android Auto app or update to the newest version of the app.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.

Your phone’s Bluetooth is turned on automatically when Android Auto is connected to the car via USB.

Step 3. Start Android Auto

On your car display, select Android Auto Android Auto. Follow the instructions to get started.

Step 1. Prepare your phone & car

  1. Make sure your phone meets the minimum requirements.
  2. Confirm that your car is compatible with Android Auto Wireless . If you're not sure, contact your local car dealer.
  3. Ensure your phone has a strong and fast cellular data connection. 

Step 2. Connect your phone

Important: The first time you connect your phone to the car, you’re required to pair your phone and car via Bluetooth. For best results, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on during setup. Make sure your car is in park (P) and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.
  1. Plug a USB cable into your vehicle’s USB port and plug the other end of the cable into your Android phone. 
  2. Your phone might ask you to download the Android Auto app or update to the newest version of the app.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
 

Step 3. Start Android Auto

Your wireless connection might take a few seconds to start. You might need to tap Android Auto Android Auto on your car display.

 
Step 4. Disconnect your phone (from wireless projection)

If you want to stop using Android Auto wirelessly, on your phone notifications screen, tap Exit driving mode.

Step 1. Prepare your phone

  1. Make sure your phone uses Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) and up. For best performance, we recommend the latest version of Android.
  2. If you use Android 9 or lower, download the Android Auto app from Google Play. If you're on Android 10, please follow the instructions here.
  3. Make sure your phone has a strong and fast network connection. We recommend you use Android Auto for the first time within Wi-Fi range for the fastest installation.

Step 2. Start Android Auto

  1. On Android 9 or below, open Android Auto. On Android 10, open Android Auto for Phone Screens.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
  3. If your phone is already paired with your car or mount’s Bluetooth, select the device to enable auto launch for Android Auto.
