Record and play back audio with USB host mode

You can record and play back audio, make calls, and video conference through your Android phone or tablet with a supported audio accessory and connector.

Note: USB host mode works on all Pixel and Nexus devices using Android 5.0 and up, except Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2012). It doesn't work with car docks.

What you'll need to use USB host mode

  • OTG connector
Use a USB On the Go (OTG) connector to connect your audio accessory to your phone or tablet.
  • Supported audio accessory
Android host mode for audio works with most USB audio class-compliant (driverless) accessories. For example, headsets, microphones, and dongles.
  • Power
Make sure that your USB audio accessory has power. You could need a powered USB hub for your accessory, so that your battery doesn't lose charge as fast.

Use your audio accessory with USB host mode

  1. With your OTG connector, plug your USB audio accessory into your Pixel or Nexus device.
  2. Follow the accessory's instructions.
  3. Control the accessory through your Pixel or Nexus device.
