No amount of contact with customers is safe during a pandemic. Social distancing measures in stores are largely impossible to enforce and checkout staff in particular have to interact with hundreds of people every day. All supermarkets need to move immediately to becoming "dark" stores which fulfill customer orders for pick up, without thousands of people walking through the doors every day.

While this transition is of urgent necessity, a raft of measures to increase workers...' safety needs to be adopted, from effective sanitiser for workers and customers, to proper cleaning of company clothing and leave for vulnerable workers.
