Next Big Thing Tour/SBE Memo: Monday, September 14

“Message from Society of Broadcast Engineers’ Program Chairman, Taylor Barker:

This summer, a gaggle of twenty-six vendors teamed up to produce The Next Best Thing Tour. Think of it like the 3C Tech Expo, or AVI Live, but mobile. Here's what you need to know: Mark your calendars for Monday, September 14. The tour organizers haven't nailed down their travel itinerary completely, so let's tentatively plan on a visiting window somewhere between 10:00am and 3:00pm (I'll update y'all once I know more, of course.) Our destination is the KBGY/KDDG/KLCI studios in Ramsey (14443 Armstrong Boulevard).

(Another note: This may seem a little obvious, but some websites may still list August as the visit intended for Minneapolis. Disregard that one, please.)

Once you arrive, head towards the registration table. This will be a contactless process, meaning you will need your mobile device, as opposed to a human being. You'll be directed to a website, where you fill out a little information, and receive a personalized badge hot off the press. The event is being held outdoors, complete with hand sanitizing station, masks available for anyone in need (you must wear one to attend), while cleaning equipment and surfaces between interactions. Supposedly, there's a water cooler around somewhere, depending on the weather. Each vendor will have their own tent, spaced apart to comply with social distancing standards, housed in the parking lot on the west side of the building (and a little bit of grassy area to the south). All of the gear is being transported in a sixty-foot-long motorhome with trailer.

The full list of vendors includes quite a few familiar names: Angry Audio, BDI, BGS, Broadcast Bionics, Broadcast Tools, Canare Corporation, CircuitWerkes, Comrex Corporation, Dielectric Communications, DJB Radio, ENCO Systems, Graham Studios, Henry Engineering, Hosa Technology, Inovonics, Kathrein Broadcast, Kintronic Labs, Masterclock, Myat, Radio Design Labs, Shoreview Distribution, Shure, SOCi, Summit Technologies Group, WorldCast Group, and YellowTec.

While this is not an official SBE event, there's a mutual interest in helping make this a success, so we're happy to midwife the venue search, and are hopeful you can attend. If you are, please let me know, in order to keep everyone up to speed with what to expect (though it may not count as an official registration).

If you have any questions about this event please contact Society of Broadcast Engineers directly http://www.sbe17.org or taylor.r.barker@gmail.com!"
