Bette Midler on TV in the 1970s One of the joys of television in the 1970s were Bette Midler's appearances on talk shows and especially on the awards shows. Here she is in 1973 winning the Grammy for Best New Artist against some seriously stiff competition... like Barry White. What a coincidence that Bette used to make fun of Karen Carpenter in her act and she and her brother Richard are the presenters. That may explain Karen's low key announcement that Bette Midler was the winner. Read

The show first aired Sept. 15, 1949, on ABC. Read

Gene Roddenberry After Star Trek Entitled
to half the profits from Star Trek, this amounted to very little
in the early-'70s before the show had yet to fully catch on in syndication. Roddenberry
confessed to an interviewer, "For a couple of years our only income
was lecture fees I got from colleges where kids still loved Star Trek,
even though it was not a commercial success." But soon there were new concepts and attempts to get another sci-fi series off the ground. Read and watch more...
Shirley
Booth's Last TV Show A
Touch of Grace was an oddball show in many ways, not the least
of which was that it focused on elderly people at a time when the
networks were all chasing a young demographic. It was an instant hit
with the critics but didn't stand a chance. Read and

Very Weird History of the Today Show Katie Couric's replacement Meredith Viera proved to be a formitable host in her own right but she too left the show in 2011 prompting the network to once again cast about for the perfect morning face. NBC thought they found her in Ann Curry but she was yanked from the show after one year. NBC is faced again with a difficult decision - will
they fall back on an idea that worked so well in the past and once again
make a chimpanzee co-host of the Today show? Read

and produced Woody Woodpecker, Andy Panda, Chilly Willy, Foolish
Fables cartoons for movie goers of the 1930s and '40s. He decided

What Happened to What's Happening!!?
"Haywood was a really good kid and Ernest was an
excellent actor. Fred Berry was the one to look out for. He could be trouble.
He received many of the show's big laughs. Unfortunately, he later had
some personal problems that carried over onto the set. After
I had left the show, there was a big contract dispute and I was told that
Fred was the instigator behind the trouble that followed. He convinced
Ernest and Haywood to join him in a strike for more money. Eventually,
the producers simply had enough of the boys' antics and they closed the
series down." Read

They Made an Album?!? Yes, most of us are already aware that the likes of William Shatner, John Travolta and various “Brady” kids have all had their dreams of musical greatness and have all put out albums of their warblings at one time or another. But… they are far from alone in the world of surprising others who have also attempted to parlay their notoriety or fame in one field into the world of the recording arts. Read

After the confrontation Sinatra's bodyguard asked Ellison to leave. "He says, 'C'mon, what don't you leave?' I said, 'What'dya mean why don't I leave? I have a membership, I'm a member here!' 'Well, Frank doesn't like the way you're dressed.' I said, 'I don't like the way Frank is dressed.' And Sinatra's saying something from behind him and I say, 'Hey you. Shut the f*ck up. The contest for the fastest mouth in the West isn't open, you got the title.'" Click for the story!

Why Did They Fire TV's Captain Marvel? "It was a precedent setting case at the Screen Actor's Guild, and Filmation
had to pay me for all the shows they didn't use me on, plus residuals.
Still, these clown's actions doomed a marvelous show. It wasn't John Davies'
fault that he was suddenly thrown into the part of Captain Marvel. It
was a rush job. I was fired at 1:00 PM that day, and he was out on the
set at 3:00 PM. That's pretty darn fast, I'd say. One of the Execs' reasoning
was "The kids'll never know the difference." Riiight. John's
a fine actor, but he's no more Captain Marvel than I am Wonder Woman." Read more...
Sanford Arms
When CBS attempts to save Two and a Half Men without the show's star Charlie Sheen they are not going into uncharted territory. Saturday
Morning Shows 1971 1970
was a very good year for network Saturday morning revenues, so 1971
brought a continuation of the shows that were working - along with
remakes of proven series from the past. All three networks started
giving in to pressure from parent groups to offer more educational,
and less violent programs. For the most part, they are all flops. Read

PUNK ROCK
In the early-eighties, young people in Los Angeles were flocking to
makeshift clubs in droves to see new, up and coming bands. Live new
music, not DJs, was what they craved. These writings provide a sketchy
look at the underground club scene in Los Angeles during the time
that groups like X, Missing Persons, The Go-Go's, The Minutemen and
Wall of Voodoo entered the public consciousness. Read
