Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Thank you for working over Christmas

A Christmas message from Manus

Merry Christmas

Christmas under capitalism

To realise the dream of Christmas we need not to reform the current unreformable capitalist system but to overthrow it. For a warm caring humanity, for Christmas every day for everyone, we need socialism, a democratic society in which production occurs to satisfy human need.

Boxing Day sales and Karl Marx

Marx never went to a Boxing Day Sale. He didn’t have the money. In recent years Boxing Day sales have become more popular as a way for retailers to recoup some money after flat or less than expected pre-Christmas revenue.

Holidays and other thought bubbles

My hope is to bring in my own small way reason in revolt to the world of tax and end the age of cant. That can only really happen if 2012 becomes the year of revolution, of working classes across the globe – from Egypt to Italy, from Wisconsin to Wukan -fighting back against the bosses and their state and setting up their own profoundly democratic society to satisfy human need.

Jesus the revolutionary?

In the face of the rampant commercialism that engulfs us at this time of year, it’s common to hear religious figures telling us that it’s time to revive the “real spirit of Christmas.” If that means reviving the radical egalitarianism of the early Christians, whom Frederick Engels called “a dangerous party of revolt,” then socialists are in favor of it.

But we need not just the spirit of the early Christians, but a revolutionary strategy based on class politics that can actually build the kind of society that they wanted.

And so this is Christmas

When production is organised democratically to satisfy human need, we, the producers of society’s wealth, will have no interest in killing each other. Then every day will be Christmas.

Christmas wishes
