I agree Peter. Maoism had and has nothing to do with socialism. There can be no socialism without democracy.

In our travels around the world, especially in South America and Africa, we have visited many countries that have gone through revolutions/uprisings of some sort, then have formed socialist governments. Democratic socialist governments.
But, over time, they have all collapsed in economic shambles. These countries by then had even more economic inequality than before. They are rife with crime and violence.
Do you ever look at these failed socialist regimes around the world when you continue to believe in your fairy-tale version of socialism? Find me some country where socialism has worked for the benefit of its population over a period of time.
Capitalism produces great inequality, but overall, people are better off than in these failed socialist regimes. There is simply more wealth to spread around. The trick is finding a way of redistributing some wealth without discouraging the efforts of those actually producing the wealth and providing the jobs. In other words, fine-tuning liberal democracies rather than throwing the baby out with the bath water (socialism).

Socialism in China is great in theory but reality shows that the Party controls who gets a ‘free’ look in to the ‘game’ of deciding who should represent them. True representation is not just not on . . .
