10 In-Demand Works on Artsy This Week

In this weekly series, Artsy’s Curatorial team offers a look at the artworks that are currently gaining traction among collectors on Artsy. Looking at our internal data, we offer a selection of works that Artsy members are engaging with through inquiries, bids, page views, and saves. The following pieces are culled from recent online auctions and art fairs hosted on Artsy, as well as exhibitions and works added by our gallery partners.

São Paulo gallery Bergamin & Gomide uploaded this Richard Serra work earlier this month and received strong interest from Artsy collectors. The work, listed at $60,000, provides an opportunity to own an accessibly sized piece by the iconic artist known for his hulking metal installations and sculptures.

Carrie Mae Weems’s photographic and video works explore issues of class, gender, race, and identity. This print from the artist’s famed “Kitchen Table Series” was featured in the auction “Artsy x Phillips: Endless Summer,” which closed on September 10th. The work received notable levels of interest from bidders and sold for nearly twice the high estimate at $11,000.

Liu Ye’s works appear cheerful and fantastical, often depicting children, cartoon characters, or allusions to art history; beyond the surface, the artist reflects on the tensions between Eastern and Western cultures. This work, uploaded by @Whatever Artspace in Hong Kong, received a number of inquiries this past week. The artist has gained increased attention in Europe and Asia in recent years: In 2017, he was featured in the 57th Venice Biennale; this year, he is the subject of a solo show at Fondazione Prada in Milan; and during the summer, his works made a splash at Hong Kong auctions.

Just days after this piece by Japanese artist Kyne was uploaded to Artsy by U Square, inquiries from Artsy users came pouring in. Kyne is best known for his black-and-white depictions of women; he is inspired by traditional Japanese nihonga painting, as well as 1980s cartoons.

This work by Jesse Mockrin is featured in Galerie Droste’s current group show “Human Is a Five Letter Word.” Shortly after the piece was uploaded, it received a number of inquiries, and just days later, it sold. While all of Mockrin’s oil-on-paper works in the show have sold, there are a number of sketches by the artist that are still available.

Osart Gallery’s current show “African Characters” showcases a selection of works that are representative of the contemporary art scenes of South Africa and Zimbabwe. This is the first time these works have been presented in Italy. This piece by Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai-Violet Hwami received particularly strong interest, with a number of inquiries placed on it.

This work by Johannesburg-based artist Nelson Makamo received a flurry of interest just days after it was uploaded to Artsy by Everard Read. The celebrated artist is best known for his depictions of children, particularly in urban centers of Africa, going about their daily lives surrounded by the city’s chaotic energy.

In the past decade, German artist Erik Parker’s work has shifted towards vibrant colors and almost surreal settings. This piece, which was uploaded by New York’s Ross+Kramer Gallery, is typical of his recent style and received high levels of interest from Artsy users this past week.

Currently featured in Galerie Hubert Winter’s latest show, “Ups and Downs of a Flipped Planet,” this work by Eliza Douglas was particularly popular and saw a number of inquiries placed on it this past week. The artist seeks to transcend art conventions in her work and leave it open to interpretation, rather than have it be defined by a particular movement or genre, such as abstraction or figuration.

This work by American artist Roe Ethridge is another popular lot that featured in the recent auction “Artsy x Phillips: Endless Summer.” This lot received a number of bids, with the piece ultimately selling well above its high estimate at $5,500. Ethridge’s large-scale works are often created from found photographs, including images from catalogues.
