Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Start the New Year off well – subscribe to Independent Australia

What better way to start off 2019 than to subscribe to Independent Australia (IA) and give yourself, and me, a late Christmas present. I am the Canberra correspondent for IA and write a weekly column for them. My recent admission to the Press Gallery means I will be reporting, health willing, regularly on the events […]

Big business: Legally avoiding tax the Australian way

Newly released ATO figures indicate that big business has avoided tax for the fourth year in a row, I write in Independent Australia. To read the article click here.

It’s time to go, ScoMo

From John Mullen in Paris 9 December 2018 It is hard to count demonstrators spread out across thousands of mobilizations, but it seems that over half a million people were involved in « Act Four » of the Yellow Vest mobilization in France on Saturday 8th December. In Bordeaux a huge joint demonstration between university […]

Revolt in France: could Macron be under threat?

John Mullen in France wrote this after the events of Saturday but before the back-down (at least for the time being) by Macron on imposing the fuel tax. He says, among other things: ‘Macron’s pathetic excuse for the fuel tax rises is the environment, whereas in fact he is busy closing down thousands of kilometres of regional railway lines, cutting the funding for local government, and slashing the social housing programmes which allow employees to live near their workplaces. So it would be good to draw the links.’

Our politicians could learn a lot from today’s youth

Government condemnation of a massive protest by students over climate change has shown us where the real intelligence lies, I write in Independent Australia.

Macron and the Yellow Vest Revolt: Report from Paris

This is a 29 November 2018 interview with John Mullen in Paris by Left Berlin. It gives a good background to and analysis of the yellow vest protests in France and their class nature. I will publish a second even more recent report by John in a day or two.
