FAQ

How do the XML Sitemaps in the Yoast SEO plugin work?

Having an XML sitemap can be beneficial for SEO, as Google can retrieve essential pages of a website very fast, even if the internal linking of a site isn’t flawless.
The sitemap index and individual sitemaps are updated automatically as you add or remove content and will include the post types you want search engines to index. Post Types marked as noindex will not appear in the sitemap. Learn more about XML Sitemaps.

How do I implement Yoast SEO breadcrumbs?

The steps below are a temporary solution as manual edits made to theme files may be overwritten with future theme updates. Please contact the theme developer for a permanent solution. We’ve written an article about the importance of breadcrumbs for SEO.

To implement the breadcrumbs function in Yoast SEO, you will have to edit your theme. We recommend that prior to any editing of the theme files, a backup is taken. Your host provider can help you take a backup.
Copy the following code into your theme where you want the breadcrumbs to be. If you are not sure, you will need to experiment with placement:

`

<?php
if ( function_exists( 'yoast_breadcrumb' ) ) {
yoast_breadcrumb( '

‘,’

‘ );
}
?>
`

Common places where you could place your breadcrumbs are inside your single.php and/or page.php file just above the page’s title. Another option that makes it really easy in some themes is by just pasting the code in header.php at the very end.

In most non-WooTheme themes, this code snippet should not be added to your functions.php file.
Alternatively, you can manually add the breadcrumb shortcode to individual posts or pages: [wpseo_breadcrumb]

If you need more details or a step by step guide, read our Implementation guide for Yoast SEO breadcrumbs.

How do I noindex URLS?

Yoast SEO provides multiple options for setting a URL or group of URLs to noindex. Read more about how to do this in this guide.

Google shows the wrong description, how do I fix this?

If you’ve crafted nice meta descriptions for your blog posts, nothing is more annoying than Google showing another description for your site completely in the search result snippet.

Possible causes could be:
1. wrong description in code
2. Google cache is outdated
3. Search term manipulation
4. Google ignored the meta description

You can read more here on how to solve the issue with the wrong description.

How often is Yoast SEO updated?

Yoast SEO is updated every two weeks. If you want to know why, please read this post on why we release every two weeks!

I'm using the free version plugin for more one year ago, on my website. I never did a problem, not even all the updates. No SEO plugin can make the jump to one website at first of SERP, SEO needs a lot of work. Each website makes history in itself: not all SEO plugin can be right for each website, there are always variables of error, even minimal, for the theme using, other plugins, customize child theme functions.php and so. Sometimes I read bad reviews about plugins generally, written in summary and hasty way. Perhaps could be enough to choose the right plugin for your own website, and requires time, and comparisons too, with calm: on WordPress, you are spoiled for choice. No plugin is to be followed to the letter as if it were pure gold. It can help but needs to work. For me Yoast SEO is very useful, it remembers me of errors or potential mistakes about content. XML sitemap tool, open graph Schema implementation, breadcrumbs with the custom title: worth alone the plugin installation. Read analysis helps too, even if I search to reduce keywords in the content when are more 5, 6 even in a long post. I tried another SEO plugin (more of one) in one subdomain I had, made errors in breadcrumbs with duplicate pages. I resolved, fortunately, with 301 redirects by myself. Things that can happen, of course, I always have a lot of respect for developers that give tools, especially free too. I would look good before writing a bad review about it: I preferred to report the issue in the plugin forum, in this way developers could resolve. I find in Yoast SEO high professional improvement, frequently, with the accurate motive each time, even to improve the translation languages for all global users. # I waited until I was sure before to write this review, based on long-term use. Especially now, finally, I have found the right theme for me, and from now on I can just think to improve the content, post by post. Regards -:)

I had been for 5 days trying to figure out what was stopping my checkout getaway page to work... I did configure Paypal a trillion times, I started accepting transfer... but nothing was working... as soon as someone was trying to pay... no matter what and how... it was not working... Today, happy day... I thought in dissabling all plugins, and voila! it did work! Checkout pages was working again and customers where able to purchase items in my store again... Dammit!!! Then I thought... ok... this mess was made by a plugin, but which? how? and why? After a lot of investigation... I found the issue... all other plugins didn't made anything... But any time I was activating Yoast SEO my checkout page would stop working... After a trillion times... (I really think Yoast is a plugin to have)... I decided to leave it deactivated... So I have not Yoast SEO anymore... at least not until this issue is repaired... I hope this helps the developers and helps many other shop owners... because the issue doesn't look small and it had been creating big trouble. Al the best Loconoise team

Changelog

14.9

Release Date: September 1st, 2020

Yoast SEO 14.9 comes with a new round of improvements, plus a new language-based enhancement: improved keyphrase recognition for Hebrew. Read more about those changes in our release post!

Bugfixes:

  • Fixes a bug where a JavaScript console warning was thrown on category edit pages.
  • Fixes a bug where the page number was not shown in the breadcrumb for paginated series.
  • Fixes a bug where the robots.txt and .htaccess file editor would not work due to get_home_path() not being a writable path. Props to druesome.
  • Fixes a bug where port numbers in the indexable permalinks were missing (when applicable).
  • Fixes a bug where the indexables table would contain incorrect permalinks for posts if the term slug had been changed and the post permalink contains the term slug.
  • Fixes a bug where the indexables table would contain incorrect permalinks for pages if the slug of the parent page had been changed.
  • Fixes a bug where a warning would occur when a query was unsuccessful while indexing post type archives. Props to Sekiphp.
  • Fixes a bug where closing parentheses would always be regarded as sentence endings in RTL languages.
  • Fixes a bug where closing parentheses would always be regarded as sentence endings when followed by an upper-case letter.

Enhancements:

  • Adds an update notification for major and minor releases.
  • Improves the SQL performance by not performing unnecessary update queries when updating a post’s public status.
  • Optimizes performance by preventing regular database queries.
  • Improves keyphrase recognition in Polish by filtering more function words.
  • Improves the feedback string in the Keyphrase in Subheadings assessment by making it more explicit.
  • Improves all keyphrase-based assessments for Hebrew by filtering function words and allowing keyphrases to be recognized in the text when preceded by a prefix (e.g., “כ” or “ל”).
  • We already had a filter available to change the default Schema Article type (wpseo_schema_article_post_types), but it wasn’t called anywhere. Now it is.

Other:

  • Adds the weekly cron schedule to the cron_schedules filter to prevent overwriting the one WordPress adds. Props to peter-webbird.
  • Merges the googlebot and bingbot meta tag values into the robots meta tag value and deprecates the Googlebot_Presenter and Bingbot_Presenter.

14.8.1

Release Date: August 25th, 2020

Bugfixes:

  • Fixes a bug in WordPress itself where script concatenation was causing JavaScript errors, which in turn led to Yoast SEO malfunctioning. This bug was introduced in WordPress 5.5. We’re fixing it by disabling script concatenation entirely.

14.8

Release Date: August 18th, 2020

Get ready for a brand new version of Yoast SEO! In this version you’ll find new Schema functionality, an improved readability analysis for Portuguese & Indonesian, and improved keyword recognition for right-to-left languages. Read more about those changes in our release post!

Enhancements:

  • Adds a Schema section to the metabox and sidebar. This section allows the user to change their Schema settings on posts, pages and custom post types.
  • Adds a new section to the Search Appearance settings. This section allows the user to change their Schema defaults for posts, pages and custom post types.
  • Fixes an inconsistency in the feedback strings that are produced by the keyphrase in SEO title assessment.
  • Improves the accuracy of the following assessments for right-to-left languages: sentence length, keyphrase in introduction, keyphrase distribution, keyphrase density, and keyphrase in meta description.
  • Improves all keyphrase-based assessments for Arabic by filtering function words and by allowing keyphrases to be recognized in a text when preceded by a prefix (e.g., “ل” or “ب”).
  • Adds the following assessments for Indonesian: sentence beginnings, transition words and passive voice.
  • Adds the following assessments for Portuguese: Flesch reading ease and passive voice.
  • Cleans up Schema @type values:
    • If it’s an array with multiple values, only output unique values.
    • If it’s a single value, output it as a string instead of an array.

Bugfixes:

  • Fixes a bug where the Yoast Dashboard widget would trigger an error when other plugins or temporary conditions would make the Yoast API response fail.
  • Fixes a bug where block editor dependencies would be loaded unnecessarily on classic editor, causing issues with NextGEN gallery. Posts with NextGEN galleries that have been broken due to this bug will need to be re-saved.

Other:

  • Sets the minimum WP version to 5.4.
  • Optimizes the logic involved in default filters for our options. This should lead to a very small increase in performance as well as avoiding an edge case where the default filter would be removed.
