Send Barnaby to Indonesia
It is a pity that Barnaby Joyce, a man of tact, diplomacy, nuance and subtlety, isn’t going to Indonesia to fix things up. I know I am disappointed that Barnaby is missing out on this great opportunity, and I am sure the Indonesians feel the same way. [Sarcasm alert.] (0)

Abbott is the abomination

Tony Abbott launched his education policy at Penrith Christian School. The school is virulently homophobic. Its statement of faith proclaims that ‘homosexuality and specific acts of homosexuality are an abomination unto God, a perversion of the natural order and not to be entered into.’ The head of the school helpfully pointed out that the words come from the Bible.

Oh, that is Ok then. As long as the Bible sanctions homophobia then my dollars should go to a school proudly destroying the lives of gay and lesbian students and reinforcing systemic homophobia.

That’s the point for Abbott. It is about education not being a liberating experience but one in which the dominant conservative values – including oppressing homosexuals – are force fed into children. By launching the Liberal’s education policy at this school Abbott was sending a clear message to the education reactionaries and homophobes across the country – it will be open slather on quality education and gays under a Liberal government.

Abbott phrased it slightly different. It was about ‘values’. He said:

The great thing about a school like this is it’s not just about getting you through your exams.

It’s not just about making good friends who hopefully will be your friends for life, important though both of those things are.

In a school such as this it is very important that we have the right values to live by, and I guess the best value that we can live by is that golden rule to ’do unto others as you would have them do to you’.

One value the school promulgates is homophobia. It is time to divorce state funding from schools of hate.

Lost in all of this is that Abbott wants to privatise education bit by bit. The first step is setting up ‘independent’ public schools, schools which can determine what is taught and are run ‘independently’ of government. Eventually their funding will bcome partially or fully independent of government.

As the Education Union points out Abbott’s commitment to Gonski over four years instead of six is actually about only funding one-third of Gonski.

A cash starved public education system, a process of privatisation and well funded private schools pumping out homophobia. Be very afraid.

The Catholic Church is so hypocritical. Many of their Priests and lay teachers are homosexual.

In the past they controlled people through their sexuality, only to end up with perverted paedophiles in their ranks, which they are still covering up.

Are you serious, you show a complete disregard for religious history and there rights of a position or stance. I would hope but do not expect you to see the hypocrisy of your rantings.

There are no ‘rights’ to condemn homosexual people. If the Penrith Christian School wants to exercise its ‘right’ to denigrate and oppress gays and lesbians then let them do so without public funding.
