I think a lot about what Mr. Rogers said and did when he accepted his Lifetime Achievement Award at the 1997 Emmys:pic.twitter.com/d4H25Ud7C2

Wow, this blew up. To clarify — I think there’s a big difference between doing THE RIGHT THING and politics. Mr. Rogers used his show to oppose segregation and multiple wars. His moral compass was not guided by political party or affiliation.

Every subtle (or not that subtle) “political” / “radical” thing he did on his show was because he truly believed that it was the right thing to do, not because he was following a political party’s marching orders. This story gets into that:https://www.salon.com/2018/06/21/new-mister-rogers-film-downplays-his-radical-edge-his-work-was-deeply-political/ …

When I say Mr. Rogers wouldn’t want us to politicize him, I mean that I don’t think he would want himself to be aligned with a certain political party. He was a registered Republican but in his show, and on occasion publicly, he was clearly against the party’s policies/actions.

He integrated a swimming pool on his show. His first week on national tv he talked about his antiwar beliefs. He had a black female mayor character 14 years before a real one existed. He was very political. It's a disservice to his message to pretend otherwise.

Hey! I definitely could have expressed myself better there. What I was trying to say is that his actions weren’t guided by political ideology or party association. He did what he thought was right, which is a political act but not a partisan one:https://twitter.com/ellievhall/status/1317102874653057026 …

I very much disagree with the statement that there were no politics in his neighborhood. The politics of his neighborhood were kindness, unity, selflessness, caring, compassion, and so many other virtuous things. They were just so ubiquitous that they became second nature.

They had a king! The land of Make Believe was a monarchy! :)

A king who was, FAR more often than not, shown to be wrong-headed and vain and foolish and less enviable than pitiable.
