ed orgs are putting out statements repenting of their almost exclusive focus on white women and promising to focus more on black ed sufferers. good. neda, for all their limitations, is an important hub of free resources for ed folks who often have little other support, and increasing the content by/for/about black people in the ed population is progress (as long as the focus isn’t mainly on “binge eating,” a prevalent, damaging trope in the ed literature on bipoc).
and, even if they do as they’re promising, it’s not nearly enough. ed justice means an end to food insecurity, an end to poverty, an end to ableism (which is racialized), an end to white supremacist standards of embodiment, an end to diet culture, an end to white supremacist capitalist patriarchy as a whole interlocking reality. this is what black ed sufferers deserve, and nothing less.
it’s especially precious when these statements come from research universities built by slaves, like UNC-CEEDS, who get all that CDC money to further medicalize eating disorders, when Science continues to do as least as much harm as good to black ppl, and whatever “evidence-based” interventions they come up with won’t be available to anyone but the rich. they think pursuing racial justice is letting one black doctoral student have their labor exploited by the research center when it’s more like burning down the whole fucking university of north carolina
