    I'm curious whether everyone is a bit too focused on ads. Yes, people can use ads to spread bad info. But let's say major right-wing pundits spread election disinfo post-election & that content is widely disseminated via tech platforms. These ad bans will be drop in bucket then.

    Google will temporarily stop running election ads after Election Day:

    i just looked up u.s. farm revenue and i'm pretty sure if they wanted to amazon or apple could buy the entire u.s. food supply coming from domestic farms and distribute it as they wished

    remember when Facebook uploaded entire SMS histories to their servers from Android phones with shaky consent? good times.

    Facebook wants Apple to loosen its grip on messaging. The head of Messenger tells me that iPhone owners should be able to pick outside apps as their default choice to replace Apple. Says it would allow FB to more fairly compete where iOS is dominant.

    A small PSA for England and Wales: the QR codes used by the NHS Track and Trace app are *big*. They look like this. A lot of venues haven't yet taken down their older QR codes, so it's useful to be able to tell the difference at a glance!

    Nicola Sturgeon confirms the no pub/cafe rule applies to ALL quarter of a million students in Scotland this weekend and that yes she does support disciplinary measures (I asked about expulsion) as a last resort.

    There's likely to be a few young people with such skills, or job fit, that "pay them half their wages to do a third of their work so you don't have to fire them" is an appealing prospect for employers. But often it's a simple question: is this cheaper than the redundancy payment?

    If you're under 30, the jobs guarantee is effectively moot for you. If you're over 41, it will almost certainly keep you employed for another six months. Thread explaining why:

    This is a good thread - but it’s worth taking it a step further and thinking about *for whom* in general the cost benefit analysis will be protective. The biggest cost to companies is redundancy payments, and this is what will keep people employed in general

    I downloaded the App. I’m ok with it as: (a) The Google-Apple API is privacy preserving (b) The companies do checks and impose conditions on Apps using the API (c) The code is open for review (people will be on it) (d) Pubs etc QR scans work the same way
