Yet more Gillian goodness, in the form of her third archival release of the year. Boots No. 2: The Lost Songs, Vol. 2 is made up of home demos recorded between Time (The Revelator) and Soul Journey, and what a treat they are. If there's one act I'd like to see in concert in the post-Covid era, it would be miss Welch for sure.

Stops My Breath

Lovely stuff from the late master. Only 200 or so lucky French punters saw Jason Molina play this solo gig in a Toulouse church turned squat back in 2005. Putting this splendid audience recording on the record player takes you at least halfway there.

I know Steppenwolf's cover is way more famous, but for me, Hoyt Axton's original will always be the go-to version. Gloriously over the top that one. Which is more or less what you would expect from a guy whose mom co-wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis.

Monk Time

Going back to the 27th of October 1968, the day Monk and his band (Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, Ben Riley behind the drums) played a one-off highschool gig in the Californian town of Palo Alto. The school janitor tuned Monk's piano, and was allowed to tape the concert in return: by far the coolest anecdote I heard this month. And needless to say, the music's not too shabby either.
