James Donald Cockcroft, 83, of Montréal, QC, passed away on 16 April, 2019, after a hard fought battle with bladder cancer.

James was born on October 26, 1935 to Donald Griswald Cockcroft and Elizabeth Lillian Powers in Albany, NY. After attending Albany Military Academy, he attended Cornell University, graduating in 1957 in Philosophy and English, then receiving his M.A. at Stanford University, 1964 (English) and his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1966 (Sociology, History, Political Science, with a Latin America /U.S./ Europe/ Development focus).

James was an historian, sociologist, political analyst, poet, and bilingual award-winning author of 50 books on Latin America, Latinos, US hidden history, culture, migration, and human rights. He was politically active from anti - VietNam war movement in the 60s and 70s, human rights activism in opposition to the shah in Iran, to solidarity movements with the struggles in various countries in Central and Latin America, especially Mexico, Cuba and Venezuela. He was a member of various professional associations, international councils and civil society tribunals and a frequent public lecturer. A US citizen and Canadian immigrant, he was a member of the UNESCO-sponsored World Council of the José Martí International Solidarity Project, one of the founders of the Network of Intellectuals, Artists, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity, la Table de Concertation de Solidarité Québec-Cuba, the Canada-Cuba Literary Alliance, and the International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity. Until his final illness, James continued his writing as well as his political activism through the international committee for the ‘Free the Cuban Five’ which successfully won their release, and had multiple invitations to be an international observer for conferences and elections in Venezuela. He was also a key organizer of the Nuestroamericana annual parade in Montreal.

In 1954 at Cornell, he met Eva Sperling, and they wed in 1957, going on to have 3 sons, Ben, Eric, and Peter. After their separation and divorce, James had a 13 year relationship and marriage with Hedda Garza, ending with her sudden death in 1995. His final relationship was with Susan Caldwell, which led to his immigration to Canada in 1999 and residence in Montréal.

James was predeceased by his sister Patt Morgan, his first wife Eva Sperling and second wife Hedda Garza. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law George and Ann Cockcroft, his partner Susan Caldwell, his sons (and family/grandchildren) Ben and Lindy Cockcroft (April, Travis and Lucas) Eric and Olivia Jones Cockcroft (Myles, Leland and Mary Mealoha) and Peter and Yali Lincroft (Sammy and Jackie), step-son Dan and Rose Garza (Jeffrey and Larissa), Susan’s son Omar Bickell and Nathalie Benoit (Maya and Malik) plus an extended and loving family of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a great-grandson and many, many long-term close friends and comrades.

También fue uno de los principales organizadores del desfile anual: ‘Nuestroamericana’ en Montreal.

En 1954 conoció a Eva Sperling y se casaron en 1957. Tuvieron tres hijos, Ben, Eric y Peter. Después de su separación y divorcio, James tuvo una relación y matrimonio de 13 años con Hedda Garza, muriéndose ella repentinamente en 1995. Su última relación de pareja fue con Susan Caldwell, lo que lo llevó a inmigrar a Canadá en 1999 residiendose en Montreal.

Fallecieron antes de James, su hermana, Patt Morgan, su primera esposa Eva Sperling y su segunda esposa Hedda Garza. Citoyen américain ayant immigré au Canada, il a fait parti du Conseil mondial du projet de solidarité internationale José Martí, était un des fondateurs du réseau des intellectuels, artistes et mouvements sociaux en défense de l'humanité, avait une place à la Table de concertation de solidarité Québec-Cuba, était membre de l'alliance littéraire Canada-Cuba, ainsi que membre du Comité international pour la paix, la justice et la dignité. Jusqu'à sa dernière maladie, James a poursuivi l'écriture ainsi que le militantisme politique par le biais du Comité international pour libérer les Cinq Cubains, qui a fini par gagner leur libération, et a reçu de nombreuses invitations comme observateur international aux colloques et élections au Vénézuela. Il a également agi comme un organisateur clé du défilé Nuestroamericana à Montréal.

En 1954, il a rencontré Eva Sperling; ils se sont mariés en 1957; par la suite ils ont eu trois fils, Ben, Eric et Peter. Après leur séparation et divorce, James a été en relation, ensuite marié à Hedda Garza, ce qui a pris fin avec la mort subite de celle-ci en 1995. Sa dernière relation de couple était avec Susan Caldwell, ce qui a amené son immigration au Canada en 1999 et le domicile à Montréal.

La soeur de James, Patt Morgan, ainsi que sa première femme Eva Sperling et sa deuxième femme Hedda Garza, sont décédées avant lui. Il laisse dans le deuil son frère et sa belle-soeur George et Ann Cockcroft, sa partenaire Susan Caldwell, ses fils (et sa famille et ses petits-enfants) Ben et Lindy Cockcroft (April, Travis et Lucas) Eric et Olivia Jones Cockcroft (Myles, Leland et Mary Mealoha), Peter et Yali Lincroft (Sammy et Jackie) ses beaux-fils Dan et Rose Garza (Jeffrey et Larissa), Omar Bickell (fils de Susan) et Nathalie Benoit (Maya et Malik), ainsi qu’une famille élargie et aimante composée de nièces et de neveux, de petites- nièces et petits-neveux et d’un arrière-petit-fils et beaucoup, beaucoup d'amis et de camarades à long terme.

En el verano de 1969 yo participé en la primera delegación de profesores (New University Conference, EEUU) para romper la prohibición inconstitucional de viajes por estadounidenses a Cuba, cortando caña y visitando fábricas en toda la isla. En La Habana encontré en la oficina de la revista Pensamiento Crítico con un nuevo amigo, Fernando Martínez Heredia. ¡Qué revolucionario integral, que capacidad intelectual! A través de los años, leí casi todas sus obras. Es que Fernando fue uno de mis "maestros" - como Martí, el Che, Fidel.
