Centre For Civil Society - South Africa

Founded in 2001, the Centre for Civil Society just completed its tenth year under Patrick Bond's directorship. Notwithstanding a much smaller staff and budget than 2004's, CCS remains productive in our major thematic work areas: political economy, political ecology and social mobilisations. Studying and advising civil society from local to global scales, our team contributed 100+ academic, popular and professional publications in 2014, while advocacy and activistsupport included more than 100 public events. Three doctoral students submitted theses and the PhD programme grew to 19 candidates, alongside five masters theses, three post-doctoral projects, and work by a dozen Visiting Scholars. Five honorary UKZN international faculty were designated for affiliation to CCS in 2015. Above all, civil society maintained robust campaigns for economic, social and environmental justice, thus fuelling our research.

Center for Anthropology and Social Change (CASC) - U.S.

The Anthropology and Social Change is unique among graduate programs in the United States due to its focus on activist anthropology. We believe that anthropologists should analyze, discuss, and explore the possible; that they should research alternative institutions; that they need to collectively reflect and debate the dilemmas of other possible worlds. This collective effort of understanding "real utopias" takes the form of analytic and ethnographic study of existing alternatives in the present. The role of the new social movements, we are reminded, is not to conquer the world, but to make it anew. What, then, is the role and responsibility of anthropology and other social sciences? In a world riddled with so many crises, few things appear to be more relevant than systematic research of counter-hegemonic knowledge and practices. Social scientists should leave pessimism for better times.

PM Press was founded in 2007 by a collection of folks with decades of publishing, media, and organizing experience. PM has published hundreds of books, pamphlets, CDs, and DVDs. Members of PM have founded book fairs, spearheaded victorious tenant campaigns, and worked with bookstores, academic conferences, and even rock bands to deliver challenging ideas to all walks of life. We're old enough to know what we're doing and young enough to know what's at stake. We create radical fiction and nonfiction books, pamphlets, T-shirts, visual and audio materials to entertain, educate, and inspire. We distribute through every available channel with every available technology, whether you see anarchist classics at our bookfair stalls; read our latest vegan cookbook at the café; download geeky fiction e-books; or dig new music and timely videos from our website.

Originally owned by the Coalition of the Left party (Synaspismos), which has since evolved into SYRIZA,  Sto Kokkino is a dynamic radio of the left, rather than a radio of SYRIZA. Sto Kokkino transmits on the free Greek airwaves and hosts the views of citizens on the right, left, center, and anarchists. The door is tightly shut only for fascists and their opinions. What interests us are news stories that cry out so loudly that those who don't listen are either bad professionals or corrupt. What distinguishes us from other media is that here people can speak without weighing political cost, without exclusions. Today, Sto Kokkino broadcasts throughout Greece, on eight cooperative stations (in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patra, Kavala, Rhodes, Lamia, Kalamata, and Heraklion, Crete) and another 20 radio stations in various cities around Greece, so the coverage is now nationwide. Our objective is to offer domestic news and information, interviews and analysis so that people abroad can understand what is happening in Greece, without the filter of mainstream domestic and foreign media. The international edition is an attempt to provide programming to other radio stations today, and television stations tomorrow.
