When I talked with a Yes on 22 spokesperson, he was quick to tout their endorsement from the NAACP. But the CA NAACP president's consulting firm has taken $1.2M from ballot campaigns, including $85,000 from Yes on 22 🧐 From + :

CalTrans hard at work erecting a fence at MacArthur and Harrison in Oakland (“Giraffe Park”) just 5 days after the eviction they carried out against unhoused people there. Why is CalTrans still evicting people, flouting CDC advice, during a pandemic? Is this fence essential?

Radio broadcasting on with a blanket over my head this morning for acoustics was a critical error. All kittens on Earth are contractually required to investigate things moving underneath blankets

The Anti-Kaplan PAC started by Bay Area Yimby org members has raised 110k in two days. Almost all of it came thru 100k from Lyft--surely revenge for Kaplan's failed ballot measure proposal that would have taxed Uber/Lyft 50cents per ride.

Kao Saelee protected California as a firefighter while incarcerated. On his release date, California didn't just fail to protect him. and actively worked with ICE to have him arrested. Story by -

Nothing in CA law requires companies to move to a rigid scheduling system. Also, a driver supporting told me he thought it could be amended (it can only be changed with a 7/8 vote in the legislature) - and said if he wasn't making enough $ driving, he'd probably oppose it

I've talked with drivers who support Prop 22 as well. On Facebook groups for drivers, responses are mixed, with some strongly supporting it. One driver said he fears mass layoffs & rigid shift scheduling if the companies have to comply with AB 5.

On MacArthur Boulevard & Harrison Street CalTrans is clearing people’s stuff and fencing off an underpass that provided shade for people to live in. They did give time for people to move. It’s happening now.

The drivers I've talked to tell me it felt awful & made them angry over the last 6 years when they'd get in their car, open an app to start driving, and have to hit "accept" on new terms that included reductions in their pay rates, again and again.

We're also about to see a whole lot of ads. Already when you Google terms like AB 5, Prop 22, "are Uber drivers independent contractors," you see Yes on 22 search ads. And Lyft has been running its soft advocacy "Maya Angelou" ad on YouTube since August.

So for I'm reporting on - the initiative bankrolled by Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart & Postmates to permanently avoid classifying their drivers as employees - and it looks like the Yes on 22 campaign gave $2 million to the California GOP on Friday

I'm sad that cancer has taken the life of Russia historian Stephen Cohen. The last time I met him in the Democracy Now! studio, we had a cute baby running around, and his whole demeanor lit up the room, talking with and engaging her. He clearly loved kids. Good grandpa energy.
