Disgraça

As we reach 5 years of blood, sweat and joy, it's time to look back not just to cheer, but to think of how and what we can do better. As free as we want us and Disgraça to be, we're still vassals to the rent, still conditioned to the amount of time & energy stolen by our modern urban lives.
Normally Disgraça keeps the lights on with the canteen but given the current pandemic, times are tougher. Right now to keep everyone safe we can’t do any concerts and we can only fit half the number of people into the canteen. Of course landlords being landlords we’re still paying all the rent, including bills like electricity and water.
In an effort to build a more sustainable space, we've decided to share this r€$ponsibility with everyone that uses, visits and somewhat cares about Disgraça.

About the space
Disgraça is an anti-authoritarian, horizontally organized, DIY social centre located on Rua Penha de França in Lisbon which has been running since 2015. For a lot of people Disgraça is a place to come to boogie down and hear their favorite bands and enjoy delicious vegan meals but at Disgraça there is much more going on!
It’s a place for building community, mutual aid and organizing diverse struggles, from the broader anti-fascist fight to the local housing crises. It’s a space where you can just hangout or you can get involved. A place to be used as a tool and to create bonds in the long fight against the status-quo, authoritarianism, Capital and the State, while challenging racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism or any vertical animal nonsense that gets in the way.


Disgraça has four floors of fun with loads of different spaces and forever unfinished projects.
Up top there’s Tortuga, the anarchist bookshop, which also has T-shirts and music plus a free food shop. Below there is the Freeshop, BOESG library and a screenprinting workshop available for all sorts of stuff.
Then there is the canteen; where all the black magic happens. World famous in Lisbon, the 100% plant based food at Disgraça is considered by just so many to be the best in town and is without a doubt the cheapest (because it’s donation ;) ). The secret? Well, there are no well kept secrets here except that anyone is welcome to share their tasty skills and learn new ones. Show up. We'll hand you a knife.


A variety of radical films and documentaries are shown in the cinema room or dining space where also benefit events are held to support local and international causes.
Down below is the concert space where along with some big international names many acts have had their first gig. At Disgraça all gigs have sliding scale prices, all the money goes to the bands' traveling costs, and like the rest of the space it’s open to all ages. Along with the concert space there’s also a rehearsal room & recording studio available to DIY and lesser known groups and artists. Right next to it we have our own workshop where we do all sorts of crafty stuff and we're also in the midst of building a gym for self defense training and other activities.

Ao chegarmos aos 5 anos de sangue, suor e alegria, é tempo de olhar para trás e não só celebrar mas pensar como e em quê podemos melhorar. Por mais que a liberdade seja um mote que marca o nosso passo e da Disgraça, somos ainda vassalos de uma renda, estamos ainda condicionadas à quantidade de tempo e energia roubadas pelas exigências das vidas urbanas modernas.
Normalmente a Disgraça mantém as luzes acesas com a cantina mas devido à pandemia, a situação complicou-se. De momento, para a segurança de todxs, não estamos a organizar concertos e só conseguimos ter metade das pessoas na cantina. E claro, senhorios continuam a ser senhorios, e a renda e as contas continuam a ter que ser pagas. No sentido de construir um espaço mais sustentável, decidimos partilhar esta responsabilidade com toda a gente que usa, visita e preocupa-se com a Disgraça.

Sobre o espaço
A Disgraça é um centro social DIY, anti-autoritário e organizado horizontalmente, localizado na Rua Penha de França, em Lisboa, aberto desde 2015. Para muita gente é um lugar para “abanar os ossos”, ouvir a sua banda favorita e deliciar-se com refeições veganas, mas há muito mais a passar-se nas profundezas da colina!
É um espaço para construir comunidade, apoio mútuo e apoiar a organizar diversas lutas, desde o antifascismo até à crise local de habitação. É um espaço onde podes só conviver como podes também envolver-te. Um lugar para ser usado como ferramenta para criar laços na eterna luta contra o status-quo, autoritarismo, o Capital e o Estado, enquanto desafia-se o racismo, homofobia, transfobia, sexismo ou qualquer outro disparate típico de animais verticais.



A diversão distribui-se por quatro andares, com diferentes espaços e projectos eternamente inacabados. No topo, encontras a Tortuga, uma livraria anarquista, que além do espólio de edições subversivas, tem várias T-shirts, discos, vinis e a recém criada mercearia grátis. No andar de baixo encontras a loja livre, a biblioteca BOESG e uma oficina de serigrafia disponível para os mais diversos projectos.
Se continuares a descer, encontrarás a cantina, onde toda a “magia negra” acontece. Conhecida mundialmente em Lisboa, a sua comida 100% à base de plantas é considerada por tantos, a melhor da cidade e sem dúvidas a mais barata (porque é donativo livre). O segredo? Bem, não há nenhum bem guardado a não ser que toda a gente é bem-vinda a partilhar as suas habilidades gastronómicas e aprender umas quantas novas. Aparece e agarra uma faca.



Uma variedade de filmes e documentários críticos são exibidos na sala de cinema ou na cantina, onde acontece, também, diversos benefits para apoiar causas e colectivos locais e internacionais.
No andar seguinte há uma sala de concertos, na qual passaram centenas de bandas, desde as que estão a subir ao palco pela primeira vez às mais batidas nos circuitos diy dos mais diversos cantos do mundo. Todos os concertos tem preços fléxiveis, em que o que é angariado serve para cobrir as despesas de transporte das bandas. Esta sala, como o resto do espaço, está aberta para todas as idades. No mesmo andar há uma sala de ensaios & estúdio de gravação disponíveis para projectos diy. Mesmo ao lado, temos uma oficina de trabalho com ferramentas e estamos a construir um ginásio para treinos de auto-defesa e outras actividades físicas.
