Waking Up Again with: Drune – Vågner Igen Igen #Chill #Downtempo #Electronic

•September 14, 2020 • Leave a Comment

Like death warmed up. Usually metaphorically but in this case literally. That’s Drune with downtempo chill for you this morning.

Drune is from Denmark and offers Vågner Igen Igen, which translates as ‘waking up again’. It’s a track taken from Drune’s near death experience, on which more shortly. The track is a woozy but ultimately epiphanic experience. There are plucked violins to start with a strangeness of noise in the background. Beats come along in faltering steps. Children play far off. But everything is still listless. All very dreamlike. And then things start to come more into focus and less disembodied. The strings have an uplifting quality, as if everything’s going to be all right. Delightful experience.

As to the near death experience, Drune explains, “Last year I went to the dentist to have two wisdom teeth removed. She pulled them out, and afterwards my head was really heavy and hurt. I went to the pharmacy to get my medicine, and got some kind of morphine before I went to my dad’s place. In the evening I started to have some struggles with my balance. I could feel a high from the medicine. I was lying on the couch chilling, and suddenly I got the idea to go to the kitchen to look for the teeth. On my way I started to feel more dizzy, and when I got the glass with my teeth, I hear this weird massive noise. It’s like violins made out of steel coming to my head like a riser in a song. It blows me over and i hear these children’s voices, and then it’s all dark! Around 30-45s I woke up with my dad’s face right up in mine. He told me that I fell in the kitchen and stopped breathing. He gave me first aid and then I woke up. My dad read the description with the medication, and saw that a side effect was heart attack 1>100.000, and that’s was what happened to me that night.”

Ambient Sunday with: Borky, Arturo, and De Moi #Ambient #Chill #Downtempo

A Sunday ambient threesome with Borky, Arturo and De Moi. They run from perky to bored to chilled.

First up is Hamburg, Germany’s Borky with Dreams. I don’t know about you but my dreams, if I remember them, aren’t usually good. But Borky is clearly in a different space. This is dreams as some thing so perky you wouldn’t believe. I couldn’t think of a simile but t’internet offers “as perky as an Arsenal fan after they win a match.” After yesterday’s result against Fulham that’ll do. This is banks of ascending synths, a celestial choir, almost synth pop beats and more optimism than you can shake a stick at. Feel good music par excellence. An injection of pure adrenalin. If you want your day to run at 110% give this a go.

After optimism comes the inevitable comedown. This is provided brilliantly by Arturo. Perhaps from Germany but the track Deep In Ennui was created in Spain. Artuo explains, “June 4th – 11th, 2014 – Summer, Barcelona. Shacked up in a studio apartment accompanied by a newly acquired pile of gold secondhand vinyl finds, the Italian / American classic novel “Ask The Dust“ by John Fante, a Roland 808 & a Juno-60. Countless all nighters creating and the days spent by the water, where Fante’s pages were consumed. Rhythms were programmed and patches altered.”

The track is one of dark noir. A bit cinematic in an indefinably sixties black and white kind of way. A quintessentially European feel. Lots of late night cigarettes and half drunk glasses of cheap red wine. The track has a dubby slow moving quality. Sounds ripple away on reverb. It’s all quite trip hop. It strays towards a jazz sense but never quite gets there. The beats have a dark crunch but never quite arrive in IDM. This is happy playing on its own. But you’re welcome to join in.

After optimism and pessimism comes acceptance. And that’s what we get with De Moi. From Prague in the Czech Republic, Enamoured II is a calming thoughtful piece. Hardly surprising then to find that De Moi says, “I have been composing since 2007. Although it may seem like a weird thought at first, studying music theory, mastering a variety of instruments, and incorporating mathematics are all ways for me to evoke the emotions I want to evoke.”

Enamoured II is a deeply emotive piece. It has a hissing wash in the background and everything revolves slowly. But it also has heart. An organic texture in among the machine made sounds. Synths throb like some sort of pulsating life force. And it quivers with emotion. Beneath the calm is boiling humanity.

Pretend there’s some sun with: Dojo Man – One Amore #Balearic #Chill #Electronic #Downtempo

They promised us sun. A last glorious sun filled weekend. In which case why am I looking at grey clouds scudding by? I’m going to pretend that there’s a warming last blast of summer by putting on One Amore by Dojo Man. I might even sit in the sand pit at the park and sip cocktails like I’m out on the beach. Parkkeeper, you have been warned.

Dojo Man returns from the UK to fill you full of late summer grooves on One Amore. This is a classic bit of Balearic grooving. It’s a beach tune. Nothing too energetic but enough to nod your head and stimulate the occasional waving of hands in he air. This is full of peace, love and unity. It’s a psychedelic, hazy, slightly stoned kind of tune. The beats and Rhodes stab along in a dubtronic manner. The tom toms pitter patter away and the spoken vocal is lost in the background. The focus is on you and the groove and your relationship with that groove. Ultimately, this offers dopey grins all round.

Sleeping with the daisies: Lazy Daisy – The Fields At Night #Chill #Downtempo

It’s been quite a week what with breaking international law and resignations. I stumble towards the weekend in need of some serious shut eye. As an inducement to some zzzz’s here’s Lazy Daisy with the wonderfully soporific The Fields At Night.

Lazy Daisy is from Portugal and says, “Our aim is to relax you, make you feel good, help you chill or even sleep :)” I’m down with that. The Fields At Night is a gentle, slow, dreamland. Beats are clipped and measured. Synths bobble airily while a piano marches slowly towards sleepy time. It has an organic relaxing quality that totally delivers on the aim. This is high quality chill that comes equally highly recommended.

White dove techno with: Murg – Psychedelia #Techno #MelodicTechno

•September 8, 2020 • Leave a Comment

Tuesday appears with a gurn this week. For we have the ravey davey techno psychedelia of Murg.

Murg is from Newcastle, UK and Psychedelia is a melodic techno or rave techno tune aimed fairly and squarely at the dance floor. There’s a bit of a 90s throwback feel but not so much that you should care one way or the other. It goes for that pounding, racing beats that raise your heart rate and synths that are constantly soaring or peaking. A tune for darkened dance floors and sweaty floors and walls. As the accompanying blurb says, “this tune raises the temperature like dropping that white dove you found inside the piggy bank in the bedroom at your parents place, right before a hardcore F45 workout.” I say, wave your hands in the air, gurn like a loon and never be embarrassed. Cracking melodic techno tune.

Acid for Monday with: Cinder – Wildfire Part 2 (Melancholic Acid Mix) [FREE DOWNLOAD] #Techno #Acid #Ambient

•September 7, 2020 • Leave a Comment

Monday’s here so let’s get some acid techno though with a more downbeat flavour care of Cinder.

Cinder is from Strasbourg, France and this track is from a live set. It’s Wildfire Part 2 (Melancholic Acid Mix). That is has a liveset background is evident in the pacing of the track. It’s not so downbeat that it doesn’t know how to gallop along and encourage your limbs to flail about. It’s a wonderful piece of modern acid techno with the melancholy coming in care of the strings. Great way to start the week.

Ambient Sunday with C O N T X T and Hviledag #Ambient #Electronic #Drone

Cornwall meets Copenhagen this Ambient Sunday with tracks from C O N T X T and Hvildag.

C O N T X T is originally from Falmouth, Cornwall and is unsurprisingly influenced by Aphex Twin. But there’s more than that in here. There’s a bit of Burial dubstep clickiness and some almost post-rock sounds. Nature Walk doesn’t feel very organic or natural. It’s all machine made but it does have a lovely leftfield IDM feel that takes its place in anywhere from early 80s electronica through to 90s IDM. Music from the fringes that deserves to be centre stage.

Hvildag is from Denmark and The track is under from his new Over Mellem Under album. It’s a deliberate attempt to bring electronics closer together with classical tropes. I normally steer well clear of such things. But on under Hvildag creates a space in which they can co-exist. It’s a strong mood piece filled with contrasting piano and electronic angularity. It’s filled with tones that arrive in a slow sequence. But this isn’t a restful piece. There’s a snarling squalling violin that intermittently interrupts the reverie to remind us that the path of existence is never smooth. A great composition.

Lunar lazing with: Mark Natale – I Fainted on The Moon #Chill #Downtempo

•September 5, 2020 • Leave a Comment

There’s some late September sun today and I’m not in the mood for anything too energetic. So, you can have this lovely chilled track from Mark Natale.

Mark is from Dunellen, New Jersey, USA and says he grew up in “a small train town.” His work often has a nostalgic quality. And there’s an elegiac quality to I Fainted On The Moon with its moon landing samples that are fast receding into history and beyond so many people’s lived experience.

The tune uses a strummed guitar with an almost country feel. In so doing it manages to link Wild West to Outer Space. But it’s also in awe of everything. It’s hardly a surprise that Mark says that, “this song was inspired by a dream I had.” It has a woozy take on everything. It’s all a bit hazy and just a touch out of focus. But things and sounds drift by just beautifully. Why don’t you join in?

Chill your Friday with: Nogymx – Kodama #HipHop #Downtempo #Chill

•September 4, 2020 • Leave a Comment

I don’t know about you but I’m so ready for the weekend. Need something to help me get over the Friday finishing line. Here’s Nogymx with the chilled hip hop of Kodama.

NOGYMX (pronounced no-gimmicks), is an artist from Galway, Ireland but currently living in South Korea. Of his work he says “I try to paint auditory paintings through my music.” If that’s the case what we have here in Kodama is the musical equivalent of one of those Japanese calligraphy pieces where the sweep of the brushstrokes create the beauty that resonates through the words. This is chilled Japanese influenced hip hop. There’s a bunch of surface noise for that ‘authentic’ feel and some guitar but that is eventually delicately set aside in favour of the crisp crunch of beats. And ultimately it’s the ehru (Japanese violin) that takes centre stage here with a sad lament. It’s a beautiful experience. Enjoy.

Ancient and modern with: Andrew Rothschild – Lokta #Electronica #Downtempo #Chill

•September 2, 2020 • Leave a Comment

The rather wonderful Andrew Rothschild is back with a new beautiful downtempo track, Lotka.

Andrew Rothschild is starting to rival Bonobo for the quality of his downtempo. He mixes electronics with folk and traditional instruments, as well as a dash of neo-classical. It’s a heady concoction. Lotka is, I think, a reference to Lotka paper made in Nepal and used by monasteries and the government for important texts. It is prized for its attractive texture, the durability and strength of its fibre and its resistance to insects.

This track manages to mix sacred and secular, old and new. There’s a timeless quality to the sounds. It mixes a slightly folktronica approach with wind chimes and what might be a kalimba. This is carefully pitched into the mix with electronic elements and slow moving beats to produce a heady yet meditative sound. The weight of the past offering solace to the present. Delightful downtempo track.
