Two years down the line, after delivering his magnum opus, Listening to the Wind, to the publisher Omnibus in a sports bag, Third Light Home returns with the soundtrack to part two of the book: independent labels of the UK, featuring tracks from Clay Pipe, Touch, Heavenly, Rivertones, Second Language, Arc Light Editions, Pressure Sounds, Injzaero and Zube records (among others). From Arthur Russell to Joe Higgs, Snow Palms to Mark Lanegan, Claire M. Singer to Vic Mars; experimental ambient electronica, dub, jazz, folk, organ workouts and a few Silver Jews tunes to hopefully lift any autumnal blues.

There’s an old Low track with lyrics along the lines of ‘If I’m late, I’ll be later than expected.’ I didn’t really think it would take me going on for three years and a few sleepless nights to write a book about independent record labels — but it has. It’s done — bar the, er, edit. It should be out in the spring (Listening to the Wind, published by Omnibus). But for now, here’s the long-delayed soundtrack to part 2 of my roadtrip talking to cool, interesting, vital, soulful and virtuous independent labels — not overly virtuous, just decent, as in: not cowboys. I say ‘roadtrip’ — and I did get to America, Germany and Africa — but this leg focuses on labels on my doorstep here, or hereabouts, in London. The music of Pressure Sounds, Touch, Zube, Injazero, Heavenly, Rivertones, Arc Light Editions, Clay Pipe and Second Language is all touched upon in nowhere enough depth (Japan Blues are held over for a future ‘world’ show). Corrections to the show: I forgot to mention that the very first record is ‘Cell Block 11’ by Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett & Dizzy (7-inch on Dub Store). In the lengthy ‘suite of English pastoralism and vintage electronics’ there’s also a snippet of a 1967 recording, Volume 8 of the Sound Effect Record 7-inch series on EMI, Seaside, ‘Beach Montage, Children’s Voices, Band Playing’. Joe Gibbs is, of course, Joe Higgs (‘Don’t Mind Me’); and David Sheppard is Snow Palms. And the two tunes dedicated to Thurston and Edie are ‘Revolutionary Dream’ by Pablo Moses and ‘Rock Version’ from Rocking Time in Dub, 1970s Versions and Dubs from Bill Hutchinson, King Tubby and Friends, a fine lp on Brooklyn’s Digikiller records, recently picked up from Honest Jon’s.

This month Chris has gone for what he is calling a ‘deep and spacey’ mix – lots of tunes from the quirkier side of dance music, with tags such as “trippy”, “cosmic” and “strange” to the fore.
Starting off with some typically off-kilter dreaminess from Sebastien Leger, a middle eight of wonky tunes from various purveyors of left-field house music such as Pezzner, Sascha Funke, one and a half tracks from Superpitcher (himself and half of Pachanga Boys) and one and half tracks from Axel Boman (himself and half of Talaboman) and finishing out with some more straight down the middle(ish), blissed out, acid-flecked house music from Steve Bug and Langenberg.

As another Ibiza season draws to a close and the nights start to draw in, this month Chris has put together a mix with a warming, ‘balearic’ feel… not the super club tech house flavour, but a deeper, more chilled affair that you might find playing at a beach club at sunset. All the traditional balearic elements are there, an acoustic opener from Feathered Sun, a house re-interpretation of a pop classic from Barbarossa, lots of deep and dreamy house music from the likes of Fort Romeau and John Talabot and finishing off with a hands in the air indie dance hoe down from Feon. Turn the volume up and enjoy (and like and share if you do)!
The veritable queen of eclectica – Charlotte Livingstone brings a genre busting mixtape of nuggets from across the musical firmament. Sounds like summer.

In his most recent mixes for Seeks Music Chris has given us his take on indie dance, explored deep and dreamy house music and shown us that vocals can be cool in dance music. This month, there is no specific theme apart from bringing all these elements together with the indie tinged and all round wonkiness of Rebolledo and Superpitcher (who also also perform together as the even stranger Pachanga Boys), the beautifully dreamy opener from Taloboman (John Talabot and Axel Boman) and plenty of wonderful vocals throughout from the likes of Qtier, Julienne Dessagne (half of Saschienne and otherwise known as the Fantastic Twins) and David Harks.
A golden era for modern psychedelic music is upon us. I worshiped at the temples of both Thee Oh Sees and King Gizzard within a few weeks of each other and acknowledged how lucky we are. So much good music and so many drummers! So strap on your prism glasses and settle in then for this 30th edition of the Antiswarm featuring a lot of long, languorous futuristic psyche in all sorts of genres and spanning 6 decades. Enjoy
Considering your average underground dance music aficionado is more likely to stick forks in their ears than subject them to ‘vocal house music’, this might seem a strange theme for Chris Bassett to pursue. He assures us however, this isn’t a mix of wall to wall funky vocal house ‘bangers’, but instead he feels the vocal elements in each of his selections add a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’ to transform a track into something altogether more interesting and alluring to the ears.
Stick your headphones on and take in these ‘voices’ from the hypnotic to the dark and moody to the uplifting to the downright strange, with tracks from Howling, Stimming, Hyenah and Tim Green.
Third Light Home returns from a road trip down the west coast of America. The first in a new series featuring music from the great independent record labels of the world today! From Tuareg guitar, gritty blues, avant-garde hillbilly and ambient soundscapes to dubby b-sides, Japanese folk and the master, Lee Hazlewood.
