If that is the case, we should release Puerto Rico as a territory and allow them to be independent of U.S. resources. If they require substantial U.S. to function, they should be pursue statehood.

In fact, the Democratic platform specifies a referendum by Puerto Ricans, not a Congressional vote, to initiate the statehood process.

Most Puerto Rican’s do not see statehood as colonization. They see it as an endless promise of acceptance. There isn’t a clear path for statehood and that’s why it hasn’t occurred for some time. Allowing the people of Puerto Rico to decide on its future is reasonable.
