My first book, Sisters in Hate: American Women on the Front Lines of White Nationalism, was published in 2020 by Little, Brown. Ibram X. Kendi called it “eye-opening and unforgettable.” The New York Times Book Review said it is “superbly written” and designated it as an Editors’ Choice/Staff Pick. Publishers Weekly described it as a “revelatory and harrowing debut.”

When I’m not writing about hate in America, I am the editor in chief of The Atavist Magazine, where I’ve edited features honored with the Livingston Award for National Reporting and the Bayeux Calvados-Normandy Award for War Correspondents. I have written for publications including The New York Times, Harper’s, The Washington Post, and The Cut. I tend to focus on social justice and culture, but I am curious about the world and game to write about anything. I once talked to Teju Cole about a dream he had in which he went to a Brooklyn house party with Barack Obama and a meme of Yao Ming. That was fun.
I was among FOLIO’s Top Women in Media in 2019, a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in 2019, and a fellow at the Sundance Institute in 2018. My peculiar name* is pronounced “say-word,” which is fitting because I love words: writing them, speaking them, reading them, editing them, sharing them. I grew up in the South and now live in Brooklyn with my husband, calico cat, and beagle-dachshund.**
