    This is a terrible decision. Research on the rollout of school rating websites (greatschools) shows that making this info easily accessible directly increases racial and socioeconomic segregation in neighborhoods and schools.

    Never miss a talk from -such a light pointing at these issues. She always gives me more clarity on a topic no matter what my expertise.

    AI keeps failing, in situations it shouldn't even be deployed in, on the same kinds of vulnerable people, with no accountability & devastating consequences - including bankruptcy, false arrests and, yes, loss of life. Today, that's what I'll talk about.

    Here's why: how could anybody have anticipated the genocide in Myanmar? Who would have imagined them as stakeholders in this huge system? Not possible. And without imagining who could get hurt and how, it's hard or impossible to design the system.

    I personally do not think it is possible to rebuild Facebook's newsfeed algorithm in an accountable way. But I'm absolutely psyched to this see this urgent public conversation take place.

    I believe that we can do better.

    This is the wrong way to look at it. Facebook employs people who consider themselves researchers but who are actually PR fronts.

    Facebook employs some the smartest, most talented researchers in the world. Many work there because they want to—and genuinely see ways in which they can—do good. I’m really saddened by how readily the company is throwing these researchers under the bus.

    The EQUAL ACT eliminates sentencing disparities ... IF IT PASSES THE SENATE. please let us know what you are doing to help. Co-sponsoring it would be a good start. Also, does it release from prison those who received unjust sentences in the past?

    Rep. Jeffries speaking on the floor of the House of Representatives about the EQUAL Act.
    The EQUAL Act eliminates the sentencing disparity between crack cocaine & powder cocaine, once as high as 100-1. It also provides retroactive relief to incarcerated individuals victimized by the failed war on drugs. The bill just passed the House 361-66!

    LinkedIn is now doing China's censorship work for them. h/t

    I woke up this morning to discover that LinkedIn had blocked my profile in China. I used to have to wait for Chinese govt censors, or censors employed by Chinese companies in China, to do this kind of thing. Now a US company is paying its own employees to censor Americans.

    As we automate more and more critical decisions across sectors of society, we'll become increasingly familiar with this category of systemic screwup wherein the humans (under)paid to oversee algorithms end up deferring to the algorithms when the algorithms get it wrong.

    The former head of BBC’s Arabic News Service posted remarks condemning Osama bin Laden. Facebook’s algorithms mistook the post for support of terrorism, and removed it. Facebook’s human reviewers assumed the algorithms were right.
