Hello and Grüezi!

STOP PRESS

10 Jun 2020: ‘(Un)certainties‘, my first-ever poem, has been shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem 2020. So humbled and delighted.

1 Dec 2019: amazingly, ‘(Un)certainties’– wins 1st prize in the Mslexia/Poetry Book Society Women’s Poetry Competition 2019. Read my unusual response to the news on Mslexia Winners’ Gallery.

25 Jun 2019: truly honoured to be included in Ambit‘s ‘Celebrating six decades discovering the greats of tomorrow today’ in ‘Ambit is 60‘ (film, Andrew Warwick).

I am a Swiss-born novelist, short fiction writer and poet based in Edinburgh, where I live with my husband, the writer Ron Butlin, and our golden retriever. I am an exophonic author (I write in English, not in my mother tongue).

My book publications include two novels (The WaitingThe Beauty Room) and two story collections (Fighting ItInside~Outside).

An excerpt from The Waiting won a UBS Cultural Foundation award, both story collections were shortlisted for a Saltire Scottish Book of the Year award, Fighting It was also  longlisted for the Edge Hill Prize, and The Beauty Room was longlisted for MIND Book of the Year.

My first published story won 1st prize in the Edinburgh Review 10th Anniversary Short Story Competition. Another was shortlisted for Eyelands 9th International Short Story Contest 2019 (Greece).
My short work has appeared in Ambit, Best British Short Stories, For Books’ Sake, Litro Magazine,
Litro Online, Unthology and numerous other publications in the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA.

I am a former Royal Literary Fund Lector and Royal Literary Fund Fellow.

An experienced creative writing and critical reading tutor, I teach at Edinburgh City Art Centre and Edinburgh University, and on Zoom.
