Extremely saddened to hear of the Air India Express plane crash in Kerala on Friday evening. I offer my condolences to the families of those affected by this tragedy, and prayers for the ongoing recovery effort.

Congratulations to PM @PresRajapaksa and @PodujanaParty on a resounding victory in Sri Lanka’s parliamentary elections today. We are confident this win would usher in greater prosperity for the Sri Lankan people and foster even closer ties between Maldives and Sri Lanka.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the brutal massacre of over 8000 Muslim men and boys at Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Even though the world failed to prevent the genocide, we must honour the memory of those slain by ensuring such crimes against humanity are never repeated.

Under new normal rules, mosques in the greater Malé area will also be opened for prayers in congregation from 1st July 2020.

Also, my gratitude to all those who worked on the frontlines- the healthcare professionals and various government agencies and volunteers- who went beyond the call of duty to successfully manage this pandemic and avert worst case projections. My heartfelt thanks to everyone.

On 1st July 2020 the National Emergency Operations Centre shall cease its operations managing the Maldives’ Covid 19 response. Under new normal rules, government offices will reopen and businesses including shops, cafes, and restaurants can start operations from tomorrow onwards.

Human rights remain an important cornerstone of our domestic and foreign policy. Very pleased that Cabinet has decided to ratify, subject to Majlis approval, the Optional Protocol to the ICESCR and the Convention to Protect all Persons from Enforced Disappearances.

Despite challenges of COVID19, we remain focused on higher education and training opportunities for Maldivians. I’m pleased that key programs such as our student loan scheme as well as High Achievers Scholarships and the President’s Award Scholarship shall continue uninterrupted.
