Due to stage 4 restrictions, our Carlton shop is closed to the public for browsing, but our staff are available to give recommendations and take phone orders between 10am-4pm, Monday-Saturday.

Please call the shop on the above number to purchase items over the phone and have them mailed out to you. We are also offering contactless pick-up of pre-paid orders for customers who live within 5km of the store.

Here is some information about how our contactless pick-up service works:

• This service is available at our Carlton shop from 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday.
• You must phone ahead and pre-pay for your order over the phone, or email the shop with your order and contact details, and wait for a staff member to call you back and take payment over the phone.
• When you arrive to pick up your order, it will be passed out to you using a system that ensures there is no contact between staff and customers.
• Please note that as per Stage 4 restrictions our shops are a collection point only. If you have changes or questions about your order or if need to speak to a bookseller, you must phone the shop.

While we are pleased to offer this service, please remember the best and safest way to shop at Readings during Stage 4 restrictions is by ordering online or placing a phone order that can be sent out to you in the mail.

Staff will not be manning our phones on the weekend so weekend queries will need to be emailed to customerservice@readings.com.au, or wait until 10am on Monday. If your question relates to a website order, please email weborders@readings.com.au.

Readings Carlton is a Melbourne icon, and has long been a gathering point for the Australian literary scene. It began life as a tiny stand-alone shop in 1969. The growing business moved to larger premises on 388 Lygon Street in 1982, making its final move to 309 Lygon Street, where it stands today, in 1998.

In June 2018, the shop underwent a renovation, and reopened in July 2018. The beautiful new space was designed by Nest Architects, who also designed our award winning Doncaster and Kids shops. The design made the shop more accessible, opening up a lot more room for browsing, and gave the shop a much-needed update of new shelving and a stunning new counter.

We pride ourselves on our knowledgeable staff and exceptional customer service. Experts in music, film, books and kids’ books are always available to answer your queries and handle special orders. Readings Carlton was awarded Independent Bookseller of the Year in 1998, 2001 and 2009.

Accessibility

During trading hours, the front door is always open and the shop is accessible for people whose mobility is impaired and wheelchair users. Clear signage can be found throughout the shop, and there is enough space for a wheelchair to be manoeuvred the length of the store.

There are several seating areas throughout the shop floor, which provides places for people to rest.

If you have any difficulties moving around the shop, encounter hard-to-reach titles, or require a pen and paper to communicate, staff members are always on hand to help.
