Being a part of Signal Curators means you will work as part of a group planning projects and get a chance to learn and hear from artists, curators and others from the Melbourne art world. You will also get to contribute your ideas to the Signal program and will have a chance to participate in workshops with Signal and our arts partners.
We are always up for new members coming along and would love to hear your thoughts and ideas. Please email us at signal@melbourne.vic.gov.au if you’d like to join and we’ll get in touch.
Past projects
Little Art Fair
In collaboration with MPavilion in the summer of 2020, (SIGNAL) Signal Curators presented a one-off Little Art Fair featuring an array of handmade illustrations, ceramics, calligraphy and zines. The art fair explored the idea of ‘my energy made this’, inviting audiences to consider how we can all use our energy—in our own ways—to be creative, and also to reconsider how technology plays a part in our lives.
NGV Tours
(Curators Club) Signal Curators worked with the National Gallery of Victoria and Nile River School to deliver a community engagement program in 2019. This included running a tour of selected works from the exhibition ‘A Fairy Tale In Red Times: Works from the White Rabbit Collection,’ followed by a collage workshop with artist and arts educator Robert Lee Davis.
Layered
In June 2019, Signal Curators presented a group exhibition at Dirty Dozen in Campbell Arcade. Using an array of materials and approaches, the group presents a suite of contemplative micro spaces that diffract a broad range of perspectives on identity and transience.
Layers
Over the course of 2018, Signal Curators developed a collaborative risograph project, featuring an array of illustration, writing, photography and thinking from this diverse and exciting group of young artists. Each of the Signal Curators designed and developed their own A3 spread, resulting in a layered assemblage of artisan papers.
Signal Quarterly
In 2017, Signal Curators edited two editions of the group publication, Signal Quarterly. Issue one looked at Australian Street Artists. Issue two focused on young creatives and the importance of sustainability in their lives and artistic practices.
Mine
In 2016 the Signal Curators collaborated with established artists in a creative exchange that culminated in an exhibition at Fort Delta.
Signal Instructionals
The Signal Instructionals are a series of three artist books based on workshops the Signal Curators programmed at Signal. The books guide you through making your own skirt with Bats of Leisure, making a clay planter with Kim Jaeger and making Bilas (woven jewellery) with Lisa Hilli. Download the skirt pattern for the Bats of Leisure book (PDF 787 KB) to print it out and make your own skirt.
Soft
As part of the Fringe Festival in 2014, Signal Curators had an exhibition of their own works at Fort Delta called Soft. Artists included Freya Alexander, Bats of Leisure, Kendall Manz, Georgia Hillebrand, Peta Petrakis, Mimi Petrakis and Gerado Godinez.
This is our Signal
Signal Curators worked with photographer Georgia Metaxas taking portraits of young people at Signal Summer and produced an exhibition as part of Youth Week at the City Gallery.
