The natural water cycle cannot function properly in urban areas because buildings, concrete and other sealed surfaces prevent water from soaking into the ground.

As the climate changes and we have less but more intense bursts of rainfall, we need to be clever about how we design our city to ensure that we use the right water for the right purpose, while minimising flood risk.

City of Melbourne practises integrated water management to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change, but we all need to be more water smart with how we conserve, capture and use our water.

See below the many actions you can take to support sustainable water use in Melbourne.
