Experience the power for yourself and charge your phone with our solar tree.
The biggest contributor to global warming is emissions from fossil fuels. While we transition to renewable energy through our
Melbourne Renewable Energy Project, it is important that we all take simple steps to reduce our energy use where we can. Find out more at Sustainable energy
Designed for the Sustainable Living Festival, our solar tree collects solar energy in its branches and funnels it down a central tree trunk-like pillar where it is captured in a battery.
The design features USB power charging sockets, LED lighting and a circular seat paneled with wood reclaimed from our ageing trees in the municipality. This solar tree represents how we can harness the earth’s natural energy and natural wonders.
The solar tree was produced by solar manufacturers
LeadSun who say, 'This project was special to us as it symbolises the combination of modern technology and environmental sustainability.'
The wooden seat surrounding the solar tree is made from Melbourne-grown timbers including:
- indigenous timbers such as banksia (red), silky oak (gold), crows foot elm (red and pale), Malealuca (yellowy), Aussie cedar (red), yellow stringy bark (latte) and hoop pine (yellow white)
- some non-indigenous timbers such as Algerian oak (brown and tan), poplar (white), osage (orange) and others.
