The visualisation has eight dashboards. You can navigate to a specific dashboard by clicking on the relevant icon or textbox on the main menu page. Click the arrow icon in the top right hand corner to return to the main menu page from other dashboards.

Drop-down menus on some dashboards allow you to choose additional dimensions or segments of data.

                    About the data

The data behind this visualisation is available and can be downloaded from our Open Data Platform.

All data in the visualisation was sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census of Population and Housing 2011 and 2016 Community Profiles and Census TableBuilder products.

Overall population figures in this visualisation are based on a count of persons in Australia on Census night and exclude residents temporarily overseas at the time of the Census. This typically results in an undercount of the population. Hence Census population estimates are later updated by the ABS by adding to it the number of persons temporarily overseas on Census night as well as births, deaths and net migration. This is known as the Estimated Resident Population (ERP). As at 30 June 2019, the ERP for the City of Melbourne was 178,955. For further explanation of population concepts and estimation methods, visit the ABS website.

Resident data shown is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night). Most demographic characteristics shown are based on a count of all persons for the area selected. However some characteristics are based on specific subsets of the population such as those born overseas or those aged 15 years or older. This is noted in the footer of each dashboard and is an important consideration when interpreting the data shown.

Household data shown is based on place of enumeration (that is, where the household was counted on Census night). Characteristics shown are based on a count of all occupied private dwellings.

Method of travel to work data shown combines single and multiple methods of transport for reporting purposes. This is due to the large number of different transport combinations collected in the Census. When classifying multiple methods of transport, the following assumptions have been applied:

                    • Train plus another method or methods are counted as “train”
                    • Tram plus another method or methods not including train are counted as “tram”
                    • Bus plus another method or methods not including train nor tram are counted as “bus”
                    • Bicycle plus another method or methods not including any public transport options are counted as “bicycle”
                    • Car, as driver plus another method or methods not including any public transport options nor a bicycle are counted as “car, as driver”
                    • Car, as passenger plus another method or methods not including any public transport options, a bicycle, nor a car as a driver are counted as “car, as passenger”
                    • Other plus another method or methods not including any public transport options, a bicycle, nor car (either driver or passenger), are counted as “other”
                    • “Other transport method combinations” include: taxi, truck, ferry and other combinations not accounted for in the above assumptions.
