The Barracudas "MEAN TIME" 1983 + "HOUSE OF KICKS" 1983 - 12'EP/45rpm

Mean Time is the Barracudas' masterpiece. Coming several years after their debut, this, the second LP from the band, takes on the direction suggested of their surfer-wannabe debut. When that album came out, the band was already leaving the surf thing behind and getting a little more serious. This is the end result of a journey through the House of Kicks and into serious rock terrain. If you combined early and latter-day Flamin' Groovies, this is what you'd get.
Tons of gorgeous 12-string Rickenbacker jangle, but with the aggressiveness that was lacking on the last few Groovies albums. At this point the Barracudas were truly an international band, featuring members Chris Wilson (himself a former Groovie) from the U.S.A. on guitar and backing vox and Jim Dickson (Passengers) from Australia on bass, along with perennials Jeremy Gluck and Robin Wills from merry ole England. Not only that, but the album originally came out in France and the band was big in Spain. The album kicks off with two of the band's finest songs, "Grammar of Misery" and "Bad News." Both of these songs show the band in their finest light: sensitivity mixed with resolve. A rare combo for such a rocking outfit. From there the pace is maintained throughout, which is why this is almost loaded with greatest hits. "Shades of Today" is excellent lyrically, and "Dead Skin" is a truly chilling account of what-ifs and coulda-shouldas. "Middle Class Blues" is unique because it tells the story of so many white people from the suburbs. The album closers, "Eleventh Hour" and the desperate wail of "Hear Me Calling," send it out the way it came in: rocking to the jangle. A must. ~ Geoff Ginsberg, All Music Guide

Shocking Pinks "Infinity Land" 2005

Shocking Pinks are the project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nick Harte.
Founded in Christchurch, New Zealand, and currently based in Wellington, Nick Harte has played in many New Zealand bands such as the CM Ensemble, Hiatus, The Incisions, Montessouri, Laudanum, Luxor Dance Ensemble, Urinator, Solaa, The Brunettes, and Pig Out.
Released in 2004, the Shocking Pinks' debut album, Dance the Dance Electric, featured a full-band lineup and introduced Harte's sound, which nodded to the sound of classic New Zealand bands such as The Clean and The Bats, as well as My Bloody Valentine's shoegaze sounds, and a budding dance-punk scene. The album earned strong reviews, including an 8.2 score on Pitchfork Media. In the wake of this success, the Shocking Pinks signed to the legendary New Zealand imprint Flying Nun Records and released two albums in 2005, Mathematical Warfare and Infinity Land, which Harte wrote and performed on his own. DFA Records signed Harte and released a series of limited-edition singles, which included remixes by The Glimmers, Deerhunter, Eluvium, and Arkitype, before issuing the self-titled album, Shocking Pinks, in the fall of 2007 —largely a remastered compilation of songs from Mathematical Warfare and Infinity Land.
In November 2013 Shocking Pinks signed to Brooklyn label, Stars & Letters Records, and announced the release of a new triple album called "Guilt Mirrors" due 18 February 2014. The first single "Not Gambling" was premiered via Pitchfork Media on 13 November 2013. The Pitchfork news item also included the full track-listing of the upcoming "Guilt Mirrors" album. The follow-up single "What's Up With That Girl?" premiered 11 December 2013, via Dazed & Confused. A third single "St Louis", featuring visual artist Gemma Syme on vocals, premiered via Pitchfork Media 13 January 2014.
The Shocking Pinks gigging lineup has featured a large number of local New Zealand musicians over the years, including members of New Zealand bands such as The Brunettes, The D4, Leper Ballet, Pig Out, The Enright House, and the Tiger Tones. - discogs

"The Rubble Collection" Vol. 9 [10 CD Box Set] 2007

This is: Psychedelic Rock, Acid Rock, Freakbeat, Garage Rock, Mod, Pop.
Originally appearing on LP from the Bam Caruso label in the 1980s, and then on CD on the Past & Present imprint in 2003, these first ten volumes (boxed) in the Rubble Collection were conceived and collected by Phil Smee. For fans of the Nuggets series, both the two American volumes and the British Nuggets, you won't find a lot of overlap. The Nuggets comps were and are for people who want what was at least the stuff of legend, if not readily available. The collection here digs deep and are, for the most part, flawless in what they present. This set, and its companion volumes 11-20 (a separate box), are very different creatures. For starters, they dig a lot deeper into the hopelessly obscure 45s and tapes of Brit psychedelia, freakbeat, Mod, and pop.
For every cut by Sharon Tandy & les Fleur de Lys, the Glass Menagerie, Pretty Things, and Flying Machine and the Clique, there is at least one to match from acts like Peter & the Blizzards, Skip Bifferty, Life 'N' Soul, and Factotums. You're getting the idea. This is for the listener who wants to dig down and get virtually everything. There are some things missing here (the second box picked up a lot of that slack), and like other series' that go down into the underbelly of the '60s, some of what's here is drek. But there are real gems, too -- ,check out the Sharon Tandy cuts like "Hold On," on disc nine, or the Velvett Fogg's "Lady Caroline," on disc ten, or Fairytale's "Lovely People" that kicks off volume six. Then there's the completely cracked and whacked, such as Dragonfly's "Celestial Empire," Orange Seaweed's "Pictures in the Sky," and Focus Three's "10,000 Years Behind My Mind." In addition to these ten handsome volumes in a single fold-in case, there is a 93-page booklet completely annotating tracks and offering discographies for artists who actually had them. In 2007, Fallout in the U.K. reissued this box again, in a limited numbered (on the bottom) limited license, limited edition of 1000 copies at a more reasonable price than the previous version. [Thom Jurek, AllMusic.  Score: 4/5 stars]

Phaze "Tonewheel Generation" 2005

Fay Hallam is a hugely respected Hammond organist, singer and songwriter, with over 10 albums to her credit and a career already spanning over thirty years...
She first came to prominence in Wolverhampton Mod-popsters, Makin' Time, in the early 1980's, along with a pre-Charlatans Martin Blunt. She and Martin, along with drummer John Brookes, then went on to form The Gift Horses, which were the embryonic beginnings of The Charlatans, which Martin and John then went on to form. Fay’s next project, was as the vocalist and organist in the now legendary, Prime Movers. This took on a rockier more progressive sound, including the 'Earth Church' LP, which was hailed by the now-defunct Sounds Music Weekly, as LP of the year. Since then, Fay has gone on to make over 10 albums, as Phaze, The Fay Hallam Trinity, and then as a solo artist, initially on the Blow Up label, with her 2015 album release, "Corona". Her second solo album release, "House Of Now" was released on Well Suspect Records in October 2016, received rave reviews, and gained airplay on BBC 6 Music and BBC London. - https://www.fayhallam.co.uk/about

Shocking Pinks "Mathematical Warfare" 2005

An always intimate-sounding blend of indie pop and electronics, Christchurch, New Zealand's Shocking Pinks are the project of singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Nick Harte. Something of a wunderkind, Harte began playing piano at age six; took up bass, drums, and guitar by the time he was eight; and studied jazz and modern composition -- as well as saxophone, viola, violin, and cello -- at ten. When he was 13, Harte started recording his songs and also performed as the one-man Z, drawing comparisons to Brian Wilson in a New Zealand music publication. He also played in several other bands, including Pig Out, Solaa, Montessori, Laudanum, the Incisions, and the Brunettes (on whose When Ice Met Cream he played drums)…
...Mathematical Warfare After returning from a six-month stay in London, Harte began working in earnest as the Shocking Pinks, a name inspired by Pretty in Pink's classic teen angst and Harte's desire to keep listeners guessing. Released in 2004, the Shocking Pinks' debut album, Dance the Dance Electric, featured a full-band lineup and introduced Harte's sound, which nodded to the spare, bittersweet sound of such classic New Zealand bands as the Clean and the Bats, My Bloody Valentine's avant pop, and dance-punk. The album earned strong reviews, including one from Pitchfork that drew the attention of indie dance label DFA. In the wake of this success, the Shocking Pinks signed to the legendary New Zealand imprint Flying Nun and released two albums in 2005, Mathematical Warfare and Infinity Land, which Harte wrote and performed on his own. DFA signed Harte and released a series of limited-edition singles, which included remixes by the Glimmers, Deerhunter, Eluvium, and Arkitype, before issuing Shocking Pinks, a remastered compilation of songs from Mathematical Warfare and Infinity Land, in fall 2007. The first word that Harte was working on new material arrived in 2012, when he revealed that he planned to release an EP, Guilt Mirrors, that was inspired by and recorded in part during the Christchurch earthquake in 2011. However, by its February 2014 release, Guilt Mirrors had expanded into a triple album encompassing dance, dream-pop and indie-folk as well as collaborations with Arkitype, Gemma Syme and Ashlin Frances Raymond. - Artist Biography by Heather Phares

Buddy Holly "The Buddy I Knew" 2000 - Vol 4

This is an interesting set; again, a must for the serious collector. There is much overlap between this set and many other bootlegs; indeed, each disc states in large letters "Tex-Mex Music Company Presents The Buddy Holly Showcase".
This set is roughly the equivalent to Polygram's Hank Williams box of the late '90s, in terms of what it does with Buddy Holly's music, except that it is a bootleg and, thus, lacks certain packaging amenities. Since MCA Records has been dragging its feet for years getting its Complete Buddy Holly box onto CD, it was only a matter of time before some enterprising anonymous producer went ahead and did this set or one like it. The result is seven CDs, 216 tracks consisting of finished songs, outtakes, mix-downs, home acoustic demos, and related recordings, starting with songs that Holly cut on a wire recorder with Bob Montgomery at around age 12 in 1948, and ending with newscasts about the February 3, 1959, plane crash that killed him. It's nearly 500 minutes of material, which sounds impressive (and is) until one discovers that it's also a bit of a mess. The producers have tried to follow a kind of chronological order, near as one can tell, although even there a certain sloppiness intrudes because they've flipped the song lineup lists on the first and second CDs; they've also included no annotation whatsoever, leaving it up to the listener to figure out the recording dates, chronological relationships of adjacent songs, and the general significance and origins of each track. Annotation would have helped, but it's not essential to enjoying the set or the music. The hits are all interspersed with the outtakes; it's hard to tell which version of, say, "Bo Diddley" is which among the half-dozen scattered throughout. Additionally, it's difficult to imagine that any but the most serious fans will want to plunge too far into the multiple overdubbing that some of these songs were subjected to, though Holly devotees, rockabilly fans, and rock & roll enthusiasts may love it. The sound quality is variable, in keeping with the sheer diversity of sources involved, but is generally acceptable or better, especially if one allows for the fact that a big chunk of this set is made up of tapes that were never intended to be heard by the public. The very personal essay by Holly's brother Larry Holley is extensive and informative, though not really about the music so much as about Holly's pursuit of a career and his private and spiritual life. - AllMusic Review by Bruce Eder

Half a Mirror on the Wall - Who Do We Think You Are is a sophisticated rock of quality - melodies are mostly upbeat and quite saturated with advanced instrumentation. Harmonious female vocals are often coloured in bluesy tints. Greater part of songs are quite memorable and such ones as "New Religion", "Half a Mirror" or "Spaceship" are really captivating.

"Country Soul Sisters" Vol. 2

Apart from the Dolly Parton tracks (Jolene, Bargain store) these tracks are not famous in the UK. Some are covers of songs that are better known via other versions, but even so, this is a collection of relatively obscure music from a British perspective. Country music fans will, of course, know some of these songs, but there are a few surprises even for us...
...The most noticeable surprise is the inclusion of tracks by Vikki Carr and Cher. Vikki recorded plenty of country songs in her own style in the late sixties and early seventies, including two entire albums that have been paired on CD as  The Ways To Love A Man / Nashville By Carr . Cher's country credentials are less obvious, but on reflection, some of her early music is not that far removed from country, while Kenny Rogers and Dottie West had a huge country hit with All I ever need is you, originally recorded by Sonny and Cher.
The one singer featured who I'd never previously heard of is Joan Harris, who sings That's a fact of life, which she recorded for Custom Records in 1970. Unfortunately there are no other facts of her life or that recording in the otherwise detailed booklet, nor is there a picture as there is for every other featured artist. (Despite not being featured in the music, there are comments about and a picture of the original Carter family.)
Those quibbles aside, there is plenty for country fans to like about this collection. Apart from Joan Harris, the only artist making their debut in my CD collection is Linda Martell. In both cases, I'd like to hear more of their music.
Two tracks each by Jeannie C Riley, Jody Miller, Barbara Mandrell and Lynn Anderson mostly avoid the obvious, although Barbara is represented by her biggest American hit, If loving you is wrong. The song has been a UK hit but not for Barbara.
While Dolly's own tracks here are famous, she is also represented via Jan Howard's excellent cover of Your ole handy man; Dolly's own version of this appeared on one of her two Monument albums and can be found on some CD compilations of her early music.
Kitty Wells is represented by her 1974 cover of Bob Dylan's Forever Young, while Patsy Cline is represented by Come on in, recorded in 1956 and sounding far more country than on her more famous later tracks.
Elsewhere, there are excellent tracks by Diana Trask, Wanda Jackson, Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty, Tammy Wynette and Jean Shepard.
If there is to be another volume, I'd like it to include Dottie West's cover of This stranger my little girl, from her Carolina cousins album. Originally by Barbara Fairchild, who is a great singer, but Dottie's version of this song is better. Dottie was a very soulful singer and I'm surprised that she hasn't featured in either of the first two volumes.(Peter Durward Harris, Rolling Stone)

Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard have been intermittently blasting out their muscular version of Medway garage-rock ™ in various combinations and guises over a period of more than 30 years, releasing dozens of albums between them. Graham and Allan were in The Prisoners (82-86), before forming The Prime Movers with Wolf in 1988, releasing 3 albums before they split in 1993. The trio were re-united in 1999 as the Solarflares, releasing another 5 albums until once again calling it a day in 2004. They also found time to play in various pairings over that period in the original line-up of The James Taylor Quartet and Goodchilde (Allan and Wolf), and Billy Childish’s Buff Medways (Graham and Wolf). These days Graham and Wolf also play cinematic instrumentals in The Senior Service, and Allan leads psych-popsters The Galileo 7 (both bands also on Damaged Goods).
The three re-united as a live band in 2013. The Forefathers formed around the idea that the time was right for rifling through the Graham Day Songbook and delivering a ‘best of…’ set: stripped down live versions of the best of The Prisoners, The Prime Movers, The Solarflares and Graham’s most recent band, The Gaolers. Recent gigs have proved that time has not dimmed their fire, energy and passion. If anything, their live performances have been more ferocious than ever. One school of thought says that The Forefathers are essentially a ‘tribute act’ – a tribute to themselves and their shared musical history… if that is true, they are the purest and best tribute act in existence – no one delivers a Graham Day song like Graham Day, Allan Crockford and Wolf Howard.
‘Good Things’ was recorded in that initial joyful rush of re-discovering old favourites and forgotten classics in 2013. Backing tracks were completely live at their rehearsal room and one-take vocals were added later. For this timely re-release, three tracks have been added to the original running order: ‘Love Me Lies’ and ‘30-60-90’, previously only available on a long sold out 45 on State Records, and a version of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Freedom’. All three cuts were recorded at the same time as the rest of the album, but the latter tune has lain in the vaults since its completion.
Graham Day & The Forefathers still venture out for occasional gigs, but if you can’t get to see them, this album is the next best thing! - https://damagedgoods.co.uk

The Saints "All Fools Day" 1987

Call this the second coming of the Saints, but the only thing this record has in common with previous Saints recordings is Chris Bailey…
...Still, it's a sharp, tuneful, and (ahem) mature work that shows Bailey's increasing confidence as a singer and songwriter. One listen to songs as grabbing as "Celtic Ballad" or the great "Just Like Fire Would" (which is kind of a neat pun) will convince you that despite the differences, the new Saints were a good band for completely different reasons than the old Saints.

"Country Soul Sisters" Women In Country Music 1952-1974

I bought, was impressed by and reviewed  Country Soul Sisters 2: Women In Country Music 1956-79 , so I eventually bought this one too. Both are of an equally high standard, showcasing many singers, sometimes but not always via their major hits...
...Among the singers, both volumes include some who aren't strictly country singers but who have dabbled in the music to varying degrees. Here, you'll find Nancy Sinatra, Bonnie Guitar and Jody Miller. Volume 2 features Cher, Vikki Carr, Jody Miller (again) and Linda Ronstadt. I'm thinking that an entire CD of country dabblers could be created while limiting the tracks to one by each woman. Even Vera Lynn recorded an album in Nashville, but I digress.
Most of the CD is filled with music by recognized country singers, although some had pop success too. The biggest hits here are A satisfied mind (Jean Shepard and Ferlin Huskey), Harper Valley PTA (Jeannie C Riley), Ode to Billie Joe (Bobbie Gentry) and It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels (Kitty Wells), but most of the other tracks are not very common on multi-artist compilations these days, even though some were big hits in their time. I particularly like Jean Shepard's other track here, Two whoops and a holler. (Peter Durward Harris, Rolling Stone)
The booklet (68 pages compared to 36 for Volume 2) is exceptional

Jim Basnight "Recovery Room" 2004

The latest work recorded over 5 years from 1999 to 2004 is Jim's most diverse work to date. A superb collaboration with co-producer / engineer Garey Shelton brings out the best in this collection of strong songwriting…
...Strong drumming by Ben Smith (Heart) lays the foundation while Mikel Rollins' (who also plays sax and flute on the album) tasty grooves and rocking Rockingham Jack Hanan lay down the bass. Superb showman and noted arranger Geoffrey Castle assembles violin and string quartet style arrangements, while jazzy visionary trumpeter Jim Knodle twists some very surprising sounds out of his horn that range from rich and beautiful to dark and empty. Susan Anthony and Marcella Carros help Jim and the gang to some very outstanding vocal harmonies that will guarantee a goose bump or two. Jim's guitar work which is the widest in scope as well as accomplished of his career is complimented on a few tracks by Jim and Garey's long time friend Bruce Hazen. "Recovery Room" is a triumph and alludes to a bright future for Jim as a writer, producer and recording artist.

Graham Day & The Gaolers "Triple Distilled" 2008

I bought this album after hearing "Something About You Girl" on the radio and the band's Myspace page. It's got a great melody line, lyric, and a hook in the chorus that'll makes you want to hear it again and again. Listening to the album, I found twelve more songs as good as that one. These are thirteen great pop / rock compositions, enthusiastically performed in a frantic, raucus niteclub, style...
...I am not familiar with Graham Day, but he's not a kid (see track 1 - "Glad I'm Not Young"). He must have some history in the rock world; the opening vocal lines of "Begging You" are iconic rock and roll. They could have been sung by Gene Vincent in the 50's, Roger Daltrey in the 60's, Iggy Pop in the 70's. I'm not saying this guy belongs in the pantheon of great rock and roll masters -- but I'm wondering why I never heard of him before. These songs are so strong they could have made two or three normal albums for a lesser talent. Here's the formula: dramatic, extended vocal lines, soaring harmonic choruses, wailing guitars, pounding drums and bass, delivered with punk exuberance by a veteran rock singer/songwriter at the top of his game and a tight back up band. Everything works; all the guitar accents and twists are perfect. Each song stands on it's own as an identifiable gem and I've decided on a different favorite after each play. "Pass That Whiskey" with Day on sitar and "Just a Song" provide brief respites from the grungy onslaught, but without slowing the pace. This is one fine rock and roll album.
One criticism: it's not a great production job. The grungy sound mix falls into muddiness on a good audio system. The CD sounded better on my computer speakers than on my hi-fi or even my car stereo. Probably good enough for mp3 though. This material deserved better. Don't let that dissuade you from giving this CD a good listening. - Bob K.

Jim Basnight & The Moberlys "Seattle - New York - Los Angeles" 2001

After the demise of The Heats (originally The Heaters), The Cowboys and The Allies, it got pretty boring in the Seattle music scene. Lots and lots of cover bands. Then in the late 80s we finally got relief in the form of The Moberleys, who gave us the most memorable, catchy and bouncy songs since The Heats, and we responded. There were lines at the clubs again... - © 2001 - DJ Johnson
The Moberlys' self-titled debut album was something of a lost new wave/post-punk classic, but little else was heard from them aside from the odd EP or 7" through the rest of their life span together. The subsequent lack of released material, however, wasn't from lack of recording, as the compilation Seattle-New York-Los Angeles (from French import Pop the Balloon) proves. The album represents a missing link of sorts, not only in the career of the Moberlys but also between the garage punk that roared out of Seattle in the 1960s, a main source of inspiration for the band, and the grunge that began to emerge in the city by the end of the band's career in the late '80s. It is a windfall of material, with 23 tracks clocking in at just over 70 minutes, almost all of it worthy of praise. The recordings span nearly a decade, the three cities of the disc's title, and two versions of the band, although the third and longest-standing unit recorded the majority of the music here. In all it is some of the rawest and most passionate new wave pop of the decade, with the melodic savvy of the Byrds and '70s power pop (the Raspberries, especially), the gutsy swagger of early Rolling Stones, the snotty attitude of punk, and the angst-laced neuroses of garage rock. The music also betrays a strong affinity for roots and country-rock. The guitars on "What I Wouldn't Do," "Alone With Her," and "Ain't It Funny" appropriate some of the twang of country, and "Ugly Side" is legitimate country-rock. The ballad "Lose Me" and the great "Elma," a slightly goofy countrified folk-rock ditty Ă  la the Byrds' "Mr. Spaceman," also have a rural lope to them. The Byrds connection is particularly prominent. "Summertime Again" crosses that band's early sound with Buddy Holly-style vocal affectations, and "I Need Your Love" sounds like a garage band simulation of almost any song off Mr. Tambourine Man. The attitude, though, is pure punk through-and-through, experienced to best effect on the nervy "Love So True" and "The Rebel Kind," a cover of an obscure post-punk gem by the Modernettes. The rushed tempos of "Tonight" perfectly capture the band's teenager-in-heat melodrama, a consistent theme through most of the album. This is music every bit as good as the best alternative rock of the era. The outstanding "Rest Up," for example, produced by longtime Moberlys fan Peter Buck in 1987, sounds like a cross between early Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and, unsurprisingly, early R.E.M., and it could easily have been some sort of hit single -- at the very least on college radio. Kudos go to the wonderful Pop the Balloon for lovingly documenting the nearly forgotten (in America, at least) legacy of the Moberlys. Unfortunately, material of this high quality (and, arguably, historical importance) has thus far resisted domestic release. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide

Graham Day & The Gaolers "Soundtrack To The Daily Grind" 2007

For those of you who don't know, Graham Day was the lead singer/guitarist/songwriter of a band called the Prisoners. They hailed from the Medway Delta in England, and put out four amazing albums of guitar-and-organ driven 60s-style garage rock in the mid-1980s. I picked up all of their albums back then, and literally wore out the grooves of the records. Of the many bands I listened to back then, they are one of the few that I have continued to listen to over the years...
…Now, some more great music from Graham Day. This CD at least matches his work with the Prisoners, but with a little harder edge. Great guitar hooks and melodies, no-nonsense production, this man is still in his prime. The music has a retro sound, yet it's original -- I racked my brain trying to come up with bands from the 60s that they resemble, but couldn't think of any, so I guess it's really his sound. Check out the preview of the song "Get Off My Track." If you like that, you'll like the entire CD. - R. DeCarli
