Toyota and Subaru are collaborating on a new fully-electric SUV
Images of an upcoming fully-electric Toyota SUV show the striking similarities between it and a Subaru concept shown earlier this year.
It's believed the unnamed concept will be the Subaru Evoltis and will share its electric 'skateboard' platform – as well as much of its SUV body – with the mysterious Toyota, first seen in patent filings revealed last month.
While it was already known that Toyota and Subaru were co-developing the electric e-TNGA architecture that will underpin future models, what wasn't clear was the two automakers cooperating on a new SUV model – much like the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ collaboration.
The e-TNGA skateboard platform allows Toyota and Subaru to lower development costs by creating a single chassis complete with batteries, electric motors, and suspension. Different body styles can then be fitted to the skateboard to create new models.
Details of the e-TNGA platform have not been announced, but it's expected there will be a number of battery options ranging from 50kWh to 110kWh, with the latter being fitted to the Lexus LF-30 concept car.
Subaru said in January 2020 the company would be moving towards an entirely electric model range by the middle of next decade.
