The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, one of our neighbors in DUMBO, announced the artists they’ve selected for the 2017 residencies last week. It’s a highly selective program, and this year they had 13oo applications for 17 spots. We know a slew of talented artists who didn’t make the cut, so we were wondering about the 17 who did, and we’re pleased to report that there are plenty of painters in the mix. The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program has announced their 2017-2018 artists and we couldn’t be more thrilled. The seventeen selected applicants (out of over 1,300) include several names we’ve mentioned on the blog, along with frequent AFC collaborator Jaimie Warren. We’re excited they’ll be AFC’s neighbors at 20 Jay Street in DUMBO.

Artist studio space is hard enough to come by these days without having to worry about how you’re going to afford it. FTFY: The Sharpe Walentas Studio program awards rent-free “non-living” studio space to visual artists, so you can get back to worrying about a blank canvas instead of an empty bank account. 17 artists are awarded the free space, pictured above, for one year. 24/7 access, freight and passenger elevators, communal kitchen spaces, slop sinks, restroom and lounge with wi-fi.

Residency news: The 2016 residents selected for the Sharpe Walentas Studio Program include a lot of representational painters this year. Olive Ayhens, Samantha Bittman, Matt Bollinger, Sascha Braunig, Jordan Casteel, Caroline Chandler, Duron Jackson, Meredith James, Fabienne Lasserre, Karen Lederer, Dana Lok, Nat Meade, Clifford Owens, Sheila Pepe, Ruth Root, Alan Weiner, and Tuguldur Yondonjamts. The process: Seventeen visual artists were selected from over 1,200 applicants by an initial review with five past studio artists: Diana Cooper, David Opdyke, Erika Ranee, Daniel Rich, and Randy Wray; the final selection jury included Tara Donovan, Keltie Ferris, Dread Scott, Joel Shapiro, and Alexi Worth.
